I couldn’t attend the interview, but I got a few details from my fiancée. First, she said the people outside, security, and document collection were very rude. She said that they weren't too bad to her, but to other people they were shouting, using impolite words, had an attitude and showed no respect to anyone. She also said the document collection seemed to be the worst, and one point yelling and an older gentleman because he wasn’t getting his documents fast enough. This is why we are giving the consulate such a low score. She said even though she's Vietnamese, she felt bad about how they were treating people. For this part of the process, she would give it 0 stars.
Once inside the interview area, she said it was totally different and she gave that part 5 stars. They were nice, friendly and were a pleasure to deal with. She said they did fingerprints and the interview in the same window. Because I front loaded the original packet, with a lot of additi... read complete review

A lot has changed since the IR-1 interview for my wife. This time she went with me for the interview for her two oldest children.
It was May 3rd and we arrived just after 6 am. The children were there and already near the front of the line.
The Vietnamese speaking greeters arrived around 6:45 and immediately tried to corral everyone. I stood back and watched as the movement down the line. They got to my family and started barking out instructions. I knew what was going on so I walked slowly back their position on line. I greeted the he greeter with a stern, authoritative voice, "Is there a problem here?" I think she wet herself. In her best broken English, she asked to see passports. I showed the passports of my wife and children. She then wanted to see mine so I politely showed her my US Federal ID which really confused her. She eventually moved on and I continued to walk the sidewalk as I refuse to simply stand in line in the Hot morning sun.

Appoint for 8AM. Got there 6:20AM. First thing we saw upon arriving were the aggressive street hawkers. These hawkers were stopping cars and grabbing people to get them to sit down and buy their drinks. We bought a water bottle so they can leave us alone so we can relax and get focus for the interview.
At 7am, people were walking across the street to lineup. Some were crossing earlier but turned away. Just sit and watch and you should know when it’s time.
We were lined up outside. I’d say about 250 people altogether. Greeters were walking up and down the line to give out instructions. I can see why they have to be rude sometimes. They were repeating instructions and people fail to follow them.
Eventually we were let in at around 745am. Inside were more lines, waiting, instructions.
We were let in the next phase of the process. This is the security part where each person has to go through metal ... read complete review

The last time I was at the consulate was 2 decades ago when my family members and I got our immigration interview. One thing I remember: it was hot. Anyway, I was with my wife for her interview and...it was also hot.
Notes:
- Have your interview letter, passport, and passport photo ready: we saw people lined up with wrong interview date/people with unorganized materials
- Do not carry backpack: backpack is not allowed. But if you do, you need to check them with people on opposite side of the street. There is a fee + remember to take out of your valuables.
- There are (potential) people skip the line - just beware.
- Wear something formal but also comfortable
- Eat something before going to the interview
An interview has multiple steps
Step 1 - Security check: get there at early. Our interview at 7:30 AM, we got there 6:30 AM and we were almost last people in line. having appointment letter and passport ready f... read complete review

We spent 3 hours at the American Consulate in HCMC yesterday for Ti’s and Thien’s (15 yo son) K-1 Visa interview.
Arriving just after 7 a.m., the line was already to the end of the block, about 80m long. We got dutifully in line and before long a couple of staff members were working themselves down the line, making sure people had their identification and respective appointment letters.
After about 30 minutes, people started to be allowed into the building. We were wanded by a security person before the building entrance, then just inside at the security station, we went through a metal detector, our bags scanned, and electronic devises were turned in for safe-keeping. Actually, the process was faster and easier than that the airport, any airport.
I was impressed with the efficiency of the entire operation. Of course, being Vietnam, the staff were very nice also; not a bark to be heard.
We then found ourselves on another long... read complete review
