Review Topic: Adjustment of Status

My husband and I (the USC) had our interview today at the USCIS office in Santa Ana. The building has a sign with a large "34" and "US Citizen and Immigration Services" in front of it. Parking is $1.25 per hour in the nearby lot (cash only). Security asked us if we had any cellphones, cameras, recording devices, knives, or steak knives.

We arrived almost an hour early, and were seen right on time. We were sworn in. We were asked the following:

How did we meet.
When did we start dating.
Who proposed.
Had he met my family.
Had I met his family.
What have we done since we've been together, like an overnight trip.
We were asked to state the other's full name, date of birth, and place of birth.
My husband was asked to confirm that some of the "no" responses on the I-485.
I was asked if that was my signature on one of the forms.
He asked who prepared the documents (I had). How long did it take ... read complete review

We went through the security and came to the waiting area about 20 minutes before the interview time. By the time our lawyer looked through the documents and our wedding pictures, we were called in by a lady immigration officer. She was all smiley and looked like a nice person.

When we entered the office we had to raise our right hand and swear to tell the truth. When we sat, our lawyer advised the IO that English is not my first language (even though I speak fluently) so I need a little bit more time to put sentences together (since I was nervous!). She asked for our IDs, my birth certificate. The IO then started going through the I-485 confirming our address, name, telephone numbers and etc. Then she went through the "have you ever..." questions. She then did the same to my husband. She also asked me how did I support myself since coming here on tourist visa (May 2008 to May 2009 when I got married). Then she started asking questions about our relationship, where did w... read complete review

-Security was lovely, which makes a change from Biometrics.
-No mobile phones; one man was sent back to his car for bringing one in.
-Have your I.D. at the ready (passport for hubby, driver's license for me).
-Quick security when we arrived; when we left at 10:20, there was a queue.
-Took elevator to the 2nd floor.
-Showed security our letter, then slipped letter into the window at the front.
-Sat down, waited to be called.
-Appointment was for 9:30, didn't see our IO until 10.
-IO was polite and to-the-point. Swore us in, then sat us down.
-IO asked for our I.D.
-IO asked John if he was a terrorist, etc. and I tried not to laugh.
-IO confirmed our address and phone. John repeated them to prove he knew them, so cute.
-IO grilled me about my prior live-in boyfriend, and whether I was with him when I knew John. Yep, but at that time, John and I were good, platonic mates. He had been planning to visit me... read complete review

Our appointment was at 9:35. We got to the civic center at 9:15 but due to our lack of knowledge we parked in a spot way away from where building 34 is. We didn't get to the building until 9:25, going through security was fast, and we got up to the waiting room at 9:27. We had to wait FOREVER! It wasn't until after 10 that we were finally called. We were taken to a room, told to remain standing and then we were sworn in. The IO asked me where I was from, asked if it was our first marriages and then asked me jokingly if I was sure I wanted to be with Wes. He asked how we got down to California, when we started talking, when we met, and when he proposed, and then we talked a lot about random things like Niagra Falls, cuz he has family around there. He asked me for anything I had joint, our passports and my EAD and AP. He told me we were approved and that he was going to go photocopy our things (ATM, Costco, AAA, and health cards). When he got back he handed me a letter to say I was appr... read complete review

Facts that are good to know :

- the parking on the premises is quite expensive 1.25$ per 30 min and can only be paid via cash. It seems there is a cheaper one nearby "The parking structure on 3rd and Birch is a whole lot cheaper. And it is an easy three block walk from 4th Street and the Ronald Reagan Courthouse to CIS."

- they let people in starting from 7 am, no camera or cellphone with camera allowed inside.

After going through the security, off to the elevators on the right and up to 2nd floor.

It's the first room after exiting the elevator.
Left the interview letter in the tray as required then sat down waiting to be called.

Our appointment was @7:20 so we didn't have to wait too long.

We followed the IO into his office, sat down, gave our ID's papers, he also took my EAD and removed the I-94 from my passport.

He asked about my husband first marriage and hubby handed him... read complete review
