Overall the experience was great.
I was only allowed to enter into the consulate 5 minutes before the appointment. Security check was quick and staff was nice. Waiting time was not long, and it took only around 45 minutes from walking into the consulate to leaving the premise. The immigration officer was patient and mainly asked questions about our plans to the US as my husband was staying with me in Hong Kong and was required to prove his re-domicile intent.

My appointment was at 8:30 AM. I arrived at the gate around 8 AM but I wasn't allowed to enter till my appointment time. Many people had advised me to arrive early due to the security check but I think you only need to be there 5-10 mins before your appointment time.
The security guard asked to see 1) the appointment confirmation letter (in my case, it was a copy of the email from the consulate), 2) HK ID/Passport, and 3) DS-160 confirmation page.
After passing the security check, I went to the 2nd floor and waited 10 minutes till a HK lady called my name. She asked to see my HK visa (I'm a South Korean national) and reviewed my docs one by one. I didn't have the original copies of Form 1-964 and related supporting documents but she said they only need original copies of the police certificates. This part took around 10-15 minutes and then I was instructed to wait again.
There was only one other person waiting in the room but I was called... read complete review
