Emailing the embassy generally gets a response within 7 days.
Calling the San Salvador embassy (which actually calls somewhere in Mexico) costs $7 from the USA and they have no idea what they're talking about. I was told to call back numerous times, and when I did, they told me to call back again, etc. They also had told me to wait so many days before contacting them about the same issue, and I ended up emailing the embassy the same day and they forwarded me the packet by email the next day. Otherwise I would have waited another month before they would re-send me the packet by snail-mail (total of 90 days!). They contradict each other.
Also, my husband could not find any place to buy the Telefonica VISA phone cards in the Santa Ana province of El Salvador, making it literally impossible for him to call the embassy from there. I pity the couple that has to deal with El Salvador. They give the American government a bad name because they are so disorganized, inefficient and callous. They have outsourced their customer service to a company in Mexico and it only makes everything more idiotic because you have a bunch of people that cannot speak good English depending on a monthly update from the embassy. The embassy does not respond to emails. In our case, they sent out packet 3 twice and the Visa Service Center wanted us to complete the requirements twice. We paid to have packet 4 sent by courier to my fiance in El Salvador and it was sent by regular mail to me in the States. At the interview, she had to endure questions on our sexual activity which I find very disrespectful and unsavory. After being told that she would have her visa and passport back in a week by a consular official, I bought an airline ticket. Now find it will be an additional 4 to 6 weeks. These guys suck. I believe they lost my case because the NVC sent my case 2 months ago to the embassy and I still have not received Packet 3, while others who have had the NVC send the case only a few weeks ago are already receiving packet 3. To top it off you cant contact them except by email or fax and it normally takes them at least a week to respond. The telephone number they do give you to find out info about your case will cost you $7 each time you call and the people you talk to have no idea what they are talking about. I have called this number 3 times in the past few weeks and each time I talked to someone different. The first person told me to wait a month, the second said wait a week, and the third person said wait 3-4 months. So inconsistent. They obviously are not informed about anything, and rather then tell the simple truth of "I dont know" they would rather lie and deceive you. I guess this is easiest for them.
