Our interview appointment was scheduled for Monday, 6/6. On our confirmation, it said that my fiancé was supposed to go alone. I called the Embassy to ask if it was possible to attend since everyone had left reviews that they had attended the interview with their fiancés. The person I spoke to told me that I couldn't attend, but I decided to take a chance and make the trip down any way. I'm glad I did! They let us both in without a problem. They honestly acted like they were expecting me to come with him. There are two portions of the interview – the document review, which consists of some questions along with the review, and then the actual interview by the consular officer.
A few things:
- The process takes about two hours in a room that is kind of like a bank office. The officers are all behind teller windows and they speak into microphones. There’s not much privacy to the whole thing.
- We quadruple checked all of our documents a couple of days b... read complete review

Nothing but good things to say, the entire embassy staff was very friendly and extremely helpful throughout the entire process. Everyone greeted us with a smiling face and enthusiasm. The document receiving and interview went super fast and smooth. I had read that I was not allowed to attend the interview with my fiance however they seemed happy that I was with her and seemed pleased to talk to both of us. Our visa was approved in a very quick, and professional manner.

1. Waited in the office for a few hours. Being that it's costa rica, no surprises.
2. After being in Costa Rica for 10 years, I was actually surprised at how organized things seemed to be. It actually didn't feel like "big government" when in the office or needing to call them, probably because we could actually get responses to emails or phone calls within 24 hours. Not perfect, but considering the normal timelines, no serious complaints.
3. Overall, the interview was through teller-window type situation, and no issues at all. Passport was mailed to the post office about 4 or 5 days later.
4. ** MAJOR ** -- so we arrived in Texas, and did not expect this, but she was pulled away for an interview. The wait was 90 minutes and the interview was 15 minutes (without me -- they would not let me attend and asked me to leave the immigration area -- which meant if there was an issue, I really had no idea how I could get back inside. Anyway, w... read complete review

I (U.S. Citizen) was warned by gringo and tico amigos that if I didn't attend the K-1 Visa interview with my Costa Rican fiance then the embassy staff would harass, discriminate, and embarrass my fiance for being a same-sex K-1 Visa applicant. I didn't believe this would happen but unfortunately it did! One (Asian-American male officer) out of the three officers asked my same-sex fiance extremely inappropriate personal questions about his sexuality. For example; Are you really gay? You don't look gay to me. How long have you been gay? Where do gay Costa Ricans hang out and hook up? How long have you been having sex with other males? Do you wear dresses and makeup? Why do you want to be gay? Why don't you enjoy sex with girls? These questions are out of line and irrelevant to a K-1 Visa interview! A formal complaint to the State Department will be filed for this officer.

The US consulate in Costa Rica was very easy to work with. Once we arrived for our interviews, we waited about 1 1/2 hours before we were called up to the window. We were very organized so it helped the process once we got to the window. We were informed that we lacked a specific type of birth certificate for my fiance's son. It's called a digital birth certificate. My fiance had never heard of such a thing and to this day, no one we have asked has heard of such a thing, but it does exist. If you fiance has a child, MAKE SURE YOU GET A DIGITAL BIRTH CERTIFICATE FOR THEM FROM THE REGISTRO CIVIL. Once we had the certificate in hand, we went back to the consulate and they let us right in. Our case worker called us right up to the window and we gave him the certificate. He then told us that her son was approved. We had our visas in hand 3 day later. They were very kind, easy to talk to, and even funny. We really enjoyed our interview experience.
