ok, I will make an exception, Second Cup it is, if ur feeling that bad!!! (F)

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

That reminds me.

My friend and I were at the local Second Cup one day. While we were standing there waiting for our drinks there was a basket of biscotti with a sign which said "Take One". So she said "Don't mind if I do," and bit into one. I started howling and pointed to the small print "$1.25 Each". They let her have it.

Ok, house update....I told the guy to forget it.

He called me back, decided what he need now was the phone number of my Husband's previous employer in Calgary (silly as we would have been happy to give THAT info to him sight unseen).

Well I went on a long spiel about how I felt this was really too much information - and I then asked him - are you worried that we won't take care of your house or are you worried that we won't pay the rent.

He said he is worried we won't pay the rent. So I said ok - have you run the 'worst case scenario' - we are going to sign a 6 month lease - you have asked us for a 2 month deposit, plus a month in advance - so that is 3 months rent that you will have - I said, I don't know what the eviction laws are here in the U.S. - but - well in a nutshell I explained to him that it shouldn't really be a concern.

THEN - he said - after we talked about evictions - something about how American's are so soft hearted and tend to help people out that they really shouldn't (he wasn't referring to us, just telling me how soft hearted they are in general - and then I guess they get burnt - hence the asking for so much info).

Yeah.

So I finally said, you know, I think it would be better if we just didn't go ahead with this, you are obviously uncomfortable, I am VERY uncomfortable.

He said ok, I said, please do me a favor and burn all the info we gave you - or shred it - he said he would shred it and wished us well and I said the same to him.

It was like he was trying to take away our power or something - in fact in thinking about this I have come to a few conclusions about this country - about the way this country is structured or runs in general.

But I have rambled on enough for now!

Sooooooooooooooo - the retard I am . . . . . .

Remember yesterday when I said I wouldn't give out my credit card, I'd rather live in a box. I'm my own worst enemy - I don't need someone to steal my identity.

So I tried to book my car at Matson online to ship to Hawaii. Or at least arrange a shipping date - drop off on the 23rd. Well I'm breezing through the online application - enter my credit card info. The website says it doesn't charge your card until you finalize everything. So I enter my address, credit card # etc - and it doesn't go through. So I click okay again - nothing. I could call the 1-800 # for help, but whatever, I'll just click ok again. Nothing. I do this 5 times and finally think - hmmmmmm - maybe I should just call.

Well I start booking, explain the problem to the very nice lady on the phone and she's like - just so you know - Matson may have charged your credit card each time you click ok. I'm thinking - yeah whatever - that's for your help - let's get the show on the road. Thank her for booking my car and her helpfulness.

Curious, I decide to check my credit card online. Sure enough $5,500 to Matson has just went through on my account. I am sweating profusely at my desk at this point. . . . . yikes!

So I called Mastercard - explained the situation. Dude is like - well I'll leave a note in the system - hopefully they will just delete the transactions - but you never know - call us back next month if they're still there and we'll try to get the funds recouped.

:bonk::bonk::bonk: And today was going so well . . . . .sigh.

Oh so sorry about that :(

I hope they credit that for you!

On a light note, maybe it would have been cheaper to buy another car in Hawaii :P

Wow. $5,500 to ship a car to Hawaii. That's outrageous! I'm with Mephys. You should just buy a new car when you get there.

:P

I'm glad you didn't take that house, Trailmix. That guy sounds like a micro-managing control freak. And if he lives next door he'd probably drive you batty. Hope he shreds your info. Nutbar.

Why is it OK for US companies to hire Canadians and have them move to the US RIGHT AWAY on a TN visa, and the same privileges aren't extended to Canadian fiances? Canadians are good enough as employees, but God forbid you want to marry one. Then you have to wait in line with everyone else. Are Canadians decent workers but nothing else???????? Too bad the F in NAFTA doesn't mean FIANCE. ;)

Two different things. Employers first have to show that they can't find a US citizen or PR to do the work before they're allowed to sponsor someone. Imagine if fiancés/fiancées had to do that? Plus, those are non-immigrant visas. Meaning the employees cannot adjust status and remain in the US or apply for citizenship. Seriously, WaitForever. You need to find something to do to expel all that frustration.

 - hubby is wondering what he married into

I'm sure they'll refund the charges - just not much room on the credit card for other things - probably a good way to solve my shopping habit. :P

It's true. There's no use in even thinking about a TN Visa. People always tell me all the time, why don't you just get a TN Visa? Umm maybe because my job is not listed and second because I want to move there permamently and get a greencard.

I love when people just suggest it like they've found the perfect solution to my problem. Like, wow why didn't I just think of that!!

:hehe:

Yes and also they aren't that easy to get and they aren't that fast - I think it took my brother in law 6-7 months and the company hired a lawyer to do it.

Plus, it's not an all 'fun in the sun' visa either. Each year they had to drive up to the Canadian border and resubmit everything and see if the CO would let them back in - no fun there.

Tell me about it! Like my girlfriends in Vancouver who have all the answers for themselves (and me). One thought that if she married her American bf (who has lived in Canada for many years) she would automatically get dual Citizenship. And the other who thought she could sneak across the border to stay with her bf for a "long visit" and then just not come back!

As soon as I start telling them the real deal of what the process is like their eyes glaze over as if they don't believe me! Sheesh!

Our teeny timeline:

Jan 23 '08 ~ met online

Mar '08 ~ 1st visit to Vancouver

May '08 ~ 2nd visit to Vancouver

Jun 08 ~ plans to move to the west coast!

Aug 8 08 ~ he moves to Bellingham

current ~ many trips back and forth across the border...
