Greetings Yardies,

Ok, so it's that time again...Jamaica elections is next week and the whole country is buzzing. Hopefully, this will be a relatively peaceful election. Unlike years ago

So who do you think is going to win, PNP- Portia Simpson or JLP- Bruce Golding? Do you think either one will REALLY make a difference in Jamaica this time around?

I think they are both incredibly lousy......pompous windbags who will not make a bit of difference after the elections.

I would love to see Jamaica go in a different direction, so my money is on Golding. If I knew how to register to vote here in the States, he would have my vote. . Unfortunately, I think there is a good possibilty for Portia to win. As devastating as the hurricane was to the southern end of the island, it will do wonders for her campaign as she is out there giving out relief checks to those who were hit hard.

I think for a real difference to be made in Jamaica, the 2 parties would have to work together with the country in mind and not looking for their pockets to get fat

That's exactly how I feel. I think Jamaica really needs a third party working exclusive for the people...FOR REAL!!Or the JLP & PNP need to seriously work together to pay down their debt and get the WTO and IMF off their backs. I am so sick of seeing these politicians promise the people the world and get in and fill their own pockets and leave the island even worse off then when they came in.

They need some real out-the-box thinking at this point. I just want to see JA returned to Caribbean leader it once was.

I think it's PNP...but I have no faith in the Jamaican government so I don't see much improvement either way.

i don't know who will win but i doubt either will make a difference, the only reason i lean towards portia is to see how ja fares with a female in head office. i would also like to add that it is common for people to berate the government on their shortcomings which is rightly deserved but keep in mind that jamaica is not an easy country to run, in many cases you are damned if you do and damned if you don't. people are never pleased and that also impedes progess.

I do agree that Jamaica is not an easy country to run. I think that despite any hardship that the people would have to face in the initial stages, if people see real, tangible progress, they would bear it. That is what the problem is, though there seems to be improvement in infrastructure, the standard of living has gotten worse and that is what many of us are looking at. Why are young people coming out of college, not able to find a job? Though it seems to be the case here in the US that college grads are not finding jobs in their field, at least they have jobs. Some of our young people in Jamaica are still struggling to find one.

Until someone actually proves that they will try and decrease the POVERTY in Jamaica and create MORE jobs and progrmas for young people...There will be no one worthy of being elected...So far, as with many countries, they are all talk until they get the votes, then they are all NO ACTION afterwards.

I for 1 was running around my house on Monday with joy when I heard that JLP won...time for a change. Sorry that Portia did not get an opportunity to implement her own mandate, but it's time. I'll be watching CVM tonight, to see if there are any particular reactions to the fact that she finally conceded. You can see the news on CVM

I have to agree with you...it's time for a change! I just really want Golding to do what he has promised to do!! As Bob would say..."Time will tell!!"

I am so jaded by the whole Jamaican democratic system...I have to see it before I will believe it!
