I've been thinking about this a lot as well! I'm Norwegian but lived in London for five years where I met my fiance. I definitely had to defend my decision to move to LA under this administration a ton in London, but I'm now back home in Norway, and people are making me feel all kinds of bad, like I'm not standing up for things I believe in or something. It's a little excessive. I'm moving to LA as well, and I'm so nervous about not knowing the city (God it's sooo different from London) and not having anything familiar except for my fiance. Most of the time I try to think of what we're going through as a romantic story, but honestly I can't help but be a little scared sometimes.

If you've already lived in London, I hope you will find LA a breeze! It may not have the same ease of getting around, but it'll certainly have all the same conveniences and cultural benefits of London. I wish you all the best!

I'm going to be my blunt Dutch self here for a moment, so excuse me for pissing you off in advance. But this is exactly the 'American attitude' us foreigners can't stand. Every time we express any fear or doubts about this very big and life changing decision, in which we bring up some very real issues and concerns, we get slapped in the face by this very list.

My views on your country have changed a great deal since I met my fiancé. There are many things I love about the States and I think it's a wonderful place. But to be honest, if things were different, he'd be moving to the Netherlands where we have a working healthcare system, paid holidays, proper sickdays, insurance that actually covers things and a retirement plan that allows my 85 year old grandmother to enjoy her grandkids in stead of wrapping groceries at Wallmart.

Thank you for saying all this. What you've put here sums up my concerns. Not that living in the UK is any more stable right now with Brexit still hanging over our heads. :(

in other words a free hand out..

and I'm not pissed, you have every right to say and speak your mind as well as I do. hopefully when you do come here you will see USA isn't all that bad and may actually love it here :-)

satire

I've been working for US  Gov in Germany and working with American for God knows how long.

Yes America is a land for freedom, yes America is unlimited possibility land that's why lot of people from countries want to go there, yes stock may be going up tremendous . BUT !!!!! social system, health care and many other things that a human being needs, still way far behind i.e. Europe.

you prolly never lived and know "our" system that's why you can't imagine what we are talking about, yet again many or even most American I know either active duty or civilian would rather live or stay here because of many things.

here is some example for you :

1. School free ( even college )

2. when you are unemployed - Gov insurance covers you ( means no matter what you are you will be covered - in US- you have no job, no money- no insurance = you die

Yes I am about to go to us and start from scratch just because I love James so much that I would give it all up. but even him, he said we will go back because, the better life condition here.

I've only spent about two months in LA in total, I can definitely see it has the same conveniences and cultural benefits of London, but I feel like culturally it's the complete opposite of London! It's an exciting new adventure anyway.

Thanks, and best wishes to you too!

It is disappointing to enter the country in times of blatant racism being a foreigner. Before you jump on me telling me to stay home and don't come, I'm home since I'm the petitioner and I'm the US citizen. You telling someone to stay home for not being able to relate to your experience is wrong. Someone coming from a different country and dare to say a different color may have a harder time in the US because whether we like it or not racism is alive and well.

There are all kinds of "isms" alive and well here.  However, the good always shines through. Even where I work.  The things that happen here in regard to immigrants being "unwelcome" at times have always been going on.  There is a good documentary called "The Forgotten Ellis Island."  At times, it was merely fear of disease back in the times before penicillin and other things were discovered.  Typhoid Mary was an immigrant.  There has been one bill or act after another by the government to keep people out.  None of this is new.  In today's era of political correctness, people just get more uncomfortable about it.  The US sent ships full of European Jews away rather than give them sanctuary and they got put in Concentration Camps.  This is not even an American thing, per se.  It just is.  It is, and it was.  Hopefully things will change one day, but I think that it is human to be afraid of people who are different and to be afraid of others who you see to threaten one's way of life.  I'd like to be angry at the idea of people coming here for a "free ride," but the reality is that most people who come here want to work.  They are not looking for a handout.  I'm a lot more disappointed with the people who are already here who feel that they are entitled and scam the welfare system and commit crimes.  I often wish we could deport some of them.  I don't think that being an American should just be given to anyone.  Even if you are born here.  I think we all have a duty to uphold a certain level of integrity and I often don't see it.  We all need to work together to make this country and this world a better place.  If a person has been so badly traumatized in another country that they want to come here and work and add to society, why not?  And, if Americans want to go to other countries to make a difference there, why not?  All of us are having intercultural marriages.  We are adapting globally.  We are all one people.  We can and should maintain our humanity while celebrating our cultural heritages.  Each person in this country, foreign or not is a potential asset to us as a whole.

Oh no! I'm sorry to hear about this punishment of yours. It's very difficult being away from each other for so long. Do you have any paperwork outlining the punishment from your work? I think that would really help. And I think as long as you can prove that you have met within the last two years you should be okay (right visa journey gurus?).

Wishing you the best of luck! Hopefully I will have some good news for you soon and some tips for the interview! 👍

Yea definitely gonna see what supporting documents I can gather...I have lots of paperwork regarding the whole issue *eyeroll*.. Thank you! Can't wait to hear your good news :D (btw super jealous you're in Medellin.. I love that city and have such wonderful memories there.. enjoy!)
