Plane tickets for wife and step son after visa is in hand

The last week or so I have been doing some pricing on plane tickets based on a rough estimate of when I think my wife and step son will have their visas. I noticed something interesting. First I priced a round trip ticket for myself and it came out to about $600. Then I priced a one way ticket for my wife and step son on the same return date and flight as me and it was about $2000 for both of them. So then I priced round trip tickets for all 3 of us and it was about $1300 total. In other words buying my wife and step son round trip tickets is way cheaper than one way tickets for some odd reason. What I am wondering is can I buy round trip tickets for my wife and step son but only use the return flight tickets for them and the round trip ticket for me? I would save over $800 doing this but I don't know if this is allowed or not. By the way those prices are based on flights on Cathay Pacific whichI flew on twice and was very happy with. If anyone can recommend any other airlines that might be cheaper I would look into it. I know it is a little early for this considering they wont have their visas for at least another 4 months but I am trying to budget ahead of time for everything.

Depends on the airline, but with some (eg Delta/KLM), it is always cheaper to get a round-trip.

However, if you don't show up for the first flight, the return is automatically cancelled. So your proposed plan will not work.

The opposite is however quite common for immigrants. Meaning, you buy them round-trip tickets that start and end in PI. Then you can cancel the return after they are safely in the US.

If it isn't difficult, it isn't worth it.

Well Cathay is quite expensive compared to other airlines. Yes, depending on the dates of travel and origin,RT tickets can be cheaper. Airlines have promo rates for RT tickets, if you are buying OW you are priced based on the regular fare not promo fares. In some case RT and OW tickets are almost the same.

On the question of buying RT tickets and using only the return, you can't do that. If you bought a ticket example LAX-MNL-LAX and only intends to use MNL-LAX; when you missed your LAX-MNL flight your tickets will be cancelled, you are a no show to your flight and you return will automatically be cancelled. I remember- the airline term for this is "off sequence".

Check Asiana, our tickets cost $545 OW.

Alternatively, you can book MNL-LAX -MNL with one year validity and can use MNL-LAX now and maybe use the LAX-MNL later on within one year for a vacation later on.

You found a round trip ticket to the Philippines for 600 hundred dollars ?!?!?!?!

Round trip from where? I have never seen a ticket for less than 1100.00

I got one from Newark to Manila last year for 550, one from Philly to Butuan for 700 back in Feb....pretty sweet deals.

From Chicago to Manila with a short layover in Hong Kong. By the way I use the ITA Matrix to search for plane tickets.

Just did a quick query search and there is indeed flights from JFK to Manilla for $600 ($590 to be exact) at th end of September. The key is to look a month or more, know the peak travel times, and be flexible in your travel plans.
