Question - certified copy of the marriage certificate - Los Angeles [merged threads]

Hi everyone,

I have a question related to the obtention of the certified copy of the marriage certificate. We are doing the K1 visa and we are planning to get married in Los Angeles next week.

I read that following the marriage we can send the marriage certificate directly to Norwalk but could we potentially bring it to them directly and get the certified copy of the marriage certificate on the same day? Instead of sending them by mail and wait for 6-8 weeks for the certified copy...

Ok so we also didn't want to wait 6-8 weeks. From what I could gather from old VJ threads you can always call and see if it's processed quicker and a lot of people were, but not all. Our officiant said there was no way of guaranteeing it by a certain date, and minimizing the time was important to us. So we ended up getting married with an OC license which takes 10 business days for the copy to be available to be picked up. ( you can use an OC license anywhere in CA).

But I would call la county to see if they will record same day, but this may just mean by dropping it off your license gets to them quicker than mail.

I'm in the SAME exact boat as you! We are looking to get legally married possibly next month and I started looking into the process for the certified certificate... I haven't found anything concrete.

The only thing I found is that if we walk it in ourselves being the married couple, they could process it faster - within 6-8 wks. If we don't walk it in, I think it will sit on a desk somewhere until they get to it later and it could take more like 8-12 wks.

the 6 weeks is for older marriage records

my step son recently had to get a copy of all his vital records and he got them in just under 3 weeks

email he received said walk into the clerk office of county of marriage but he is in NC and had to apply online

check with the county as county fee can be different than the state fee

FWIW, we were married at the county clerk's office here and received 5 certified copies immediately after the ceremony. We had a great reception the following day and the ceremony was just family and close friends. You might want to look into doing it at the county clerk/recorder's office to get the certified certificate as fast as possible.

Give them a call. Each county has different ways of processing and we almost went with somewhere in Northern California as they could do same day as Daveykins said. We were told OC is still two weeks even with a ceremony at the clerks office. But we didn't ask on time for LA county.

So how did it go, if you don't mind me asking? Did you go get married yet? Were you able to get the certificate copies same day?

Hi Maria R323, it went well! We got married on June 10th and we tried to get the copy of our certificate right away but they say that they could not give it to us on the same day. They told us that because we got married at the Norwalk office, our request was put on top of any other requests from different offices. They say to start calling them June 15th (I should try to call tomorrow) and see if the certificate copy is ready (so not even a week after the marriage). If we want, we can get it faster by going back to Norwalk but because we already paid for 2 copies, we are going to wait to receive them and apparently it should not take more than 4 days after the certificate copies are ready to be sent.

So if you want to get your copy quickly, you should go to the Norwalk office, otherwise you will have to wait 6 to 8 weeks...
