I submitted my I-751 application. When I check online for the state of my case it says that they received my "form CRI-89." Is this the same as I-751? Shouldn't it say "I-751" instead?

CRI-89 is the biometric portion of the I-751. Essentially for all practical purposes it is the same thing. One won't be approved before the other.

I think years back there wasn't a standardized biometrics collection. People used to manually submit photographs and fingerprints on I-89 form/card (CR stands for conditional resident). When they standardized the process as is today's (all data collected at application support center), there was no need for the CRI-89 portion, but bureaucracy couldn't combine them into a single petition. So now both are concurrent processes, that's why we get two tracking numbers. One comes with the NOA letter and for all tracking purposes a useless number, and the second comes with the biometrics letter and until the approval and delivery of the card useful to track the petition.

Please take a few moments to re-read the Form I-797 NOA1 ROC receipt/extension letter that you received, in particular, the fifth paragraph.
