Social Security Card "Valid for Work Only"

Our case was K-1; after getting EAD card, we applied and received the SSN card. However, on the SSN card, it prints "Valid for Work Only". What does that mean? And does that implicate that we have to do something to get that phrase removed when we receive the Green Card, and will we keep the same number after having the Green Card? Can we use this SSN number now to file tax return? Thanks very much for your comments/answers! Regards...

I assume it is (or should be) "valid for work only with DHS authorization" and it just means that on its own it's not proof that you're eligible to work, but that you must show any potential employer your work authorization (the EAD card) as well. You can file taxes with it etc.

As for getting the language removed, yes, once you get the green card you should be able to go to the SSA and get a new card issued without that text on it.

Your card probably says "valid for work only with DHS authorization", which the EAD itself is the authorization.

After you adjust status and get your green card you should bring your GC to the SSA office to issue a new social security card.

Thank you both for you feedback! Yes, the quoted phrase you both noted is exactly what it says. So when we have the GC and return to the SSN office to get that phrase removed, will we keep the same SSN number? They won't be assigning a new number, will they?

My husband has received his AP/EAD combo card and will now apply for his Social Security #.

When you applied, what documents did you need to take?

Passport, AP/EAD card, marriage certificate, passport?

Oh... He can take the Green Card to DOL and get his ID; then take the temporary copy to SSN office if you don't want to wait until DOL mails the ID home.
