We are looking for a Montreal Hotel with kitchen and separate bedroom (in case one of us wants to sleep in). We will be in Montreal for at least a week for medical and interview and would like to prepare some of our own meals.

We are considering the Candlewood Suites (191 Rene Levesque Boulevard East) but read reviews about it being in the "Red Light District" so worried about noise and danger. Maybe it is one of those "you get what you pay for" since it is running about $90.00/night.

We are walkers so that is not an issue. Safety and peace of mind along with a decent price are what we are looking for. If breakfast happens to be included that is a bonus.

Thanks in advance.

We just got back from our interview in Montreal. We stayed in that area, just a few blocks north on Rue de Bullion, about a 10 minute walk to the consulate. We had no complaints about the noise or safety of the area. It's true, the red light district is close to that area, but it is mostly contained to Rue St-Catherine at Boulevard St. Laurent and north (east? apparently north on a map is East in Montreal...). We even walked thru that area at about 1am Saturday night with no problem.

If you are feeling a bit adventurous, I'd check out apartments on AirBnB. We ended up with a 2 bedroom apartment with kitchen and a free parking spot (as we had other friends joining us for the weekend) for about $125 (US) per night, and the one-bedrooms are significantly cheaper. Just check on the reviews to make sure the host is reputable. Ours was very accommodating and made our stay easy.

Hope your interview goes well!

My fiancee and I recently stayed at L'Appartement and I would recommend it. The rooms are a little dated but it's clean and the location is very good, literally across the street from Medisys, a short walk from the Consulate. Breakfast is included.

Our room didn't have a separate bedroom, I'm pretty sure they have suites that do. All rooms have kitchens and there is a grocery store (Provigo, I think) a block away.

The Square Phillips hotel would also fit your criteria and it is a bit more modern, but also definitely more expensive.

Otherwise, AirBnB is a very good suggestion also. We considered it but since we got the hotel at a cheaper rate (booked together with the airfare) we decided to go with that in the end.

My fiance and I used AirBnB and found a great full apartment to rent for the 4 days we were there. Much cheaper then the hotels around there and we've used AirBnB before so we're accustomed to it. We were a 10 minute walk from the embassy and 16 floors up; it was a great view. If you're the BnB type I'd recommend AirBnB. It's always an adventure lol.

Can you please explain how AirBnB works. I have looked for places in Montreal on their website and the prices seems reasonable but not sure what to watch out for, what to look for, etc...

We have never stayed in a Bed and breakfast type place, I guess we have always been hotel people.

Any help would be appreciated. This could be the start of places to stay in other cities when we travel.

Thanks,

Marcia

Well... if you've never used AirBnB it may be a bit of a change for you. How well are you at adapting? Quite often we find the pics always make the place seem bigger than it is, but other than that we've had no bad experiences. We've always contacted the owners beforehand and you usually meet them to some degree after (we've done everything from a very brief meet to hand over keys to a full out meet and greet happy hour haha). You can contact the owners and ask questions, etc, and just sort of try to get a feel for both them and the place. Reading the reviews are important too.

Recently we stayed at an Aloft hotel in Detroit and had a fabulous experience; really top notch. I see there's one of those in Montreal; I don't know how close it is but if it's anything like the one in Detroit I'd recommend it in a hearbeat!

I don't have any suggestions as none of the hotels I know downtown have kitchens and I live in the suburbs of Montreal.

But the Aloft while really nice (and have stayed at others) is out near the airport so not really ideal to get Medisys or the Consulate. Not much to do out there either for days you need to wait.
