Point of Entry Procedures when traveling with Fiancée on her K-1 Visa

I am the U.S. citizen who is the sponsor to my fiancée who is a Colombian citizen. We will be traveling together from Bogotá to Norfolk, VA, with the POE being Atlanta. She has her approved visa, sealed packet (delivered with visa), her copy of the K-1 petition, and various proof of relationship items (photos, hand written letters between us, etc.).

When we land in ATL what happens next? (from all the times I have traveled I know I have to go through customs)

How long can I stay with her?

When will we be separated?

After separated, when and where can we reunite?

Is there anyone I need to tell in particular that we are traveling together?

Those are just some of the questions that come to mind as we prepare for our trip. Any pointers, advice, info on this would be greatly appreciate. I have been searching through the forums but have not been able to find anything that addresses specifically traveling together, points of separation/reunited etc.

Thanks,

T-Mo

Do not open the envelope! She must give yellow sealed envelope officer at the airport in USA. Of course you can say in airport, you're her fiance and you fly together with her to the United States. You guys have 90 days with K-1 visa in USA. You have to marry her in USA within 90 days or she would return home. You can live with her before the wedding .... and after the wedding. no limit.

-Is there anyone I need to tell in particular that we are traveling together?- NO

Good luck guys?✌?️??

I read this about IR/CR-1 procedures at POE, likely similar for K-1 too (anyone can correct me).

Both enter non-US passport line. When the turn comes, both go to the officer, hand over the sealed packet and passports. IO will fingerprint/picture her, then escort her (you tag along) to secondary. They'll review package contents, ask any questions, and approve her entry. I doubt you two will be separated.

When you land in ATL, you will need to pass through passport control. Since you are traveling together, you can both go through the US citizen's line (because you are the USC). When you arrive to the immigration counter, hand over your USC passport and tell the officer that your fiancee is with you and she is on a K-1 visa. The officer will ask for your fiancee's passport and the big do-not-open envelope you are supposed to turn in. The officer will ask a few questions and take a digital photo and some fingerprints of your fiancee. What happens next varies by airport: the officer can ask you a few simple questions, stamp your fiancee's passport and you are on your way. Or, you will be directed to a waiting area. You will then be called to an IO's office, both of you can go, and you will be asked a few questions. After that, the officer will stamp your fiancee's passport, and you will be on your way. Next stop is customs.

You can be with her the entire time, you won't be separated.

This is the one event that wasn't explained to me by out attorneys. I brought my fiancee' through Houston and I went through the non citizens line with my fiancee'. Well, he ended up brought to another room and I wasn't permitted to attend with him. I waited about one hour and 15 minutes at the end where everyone funnels down the escalator to Customs. If I had known this was a normal procedure, I would have felt a lot better. The wait was due to many people waiting to speak to an officer which took about two minutes with some simple questions. So, if you get separated, don't panic. Just try to wait in an area where he will exit and be joined with you. Your back up plan is to meet at the carousel where you pick up your luggage for your flight.
