I'm adjusting from J1 too, but mine has expired. We thought we gonna make it till the visa expiration date, but couldn't make it in time. Good luck to everyone guys!

I'm kinda worried, we sent ours on Tuesday with 2 days expedite USPS shipping, but they haven't update the tracking info since 5AM yesterday when the package was still in NH. I am kinda stressed that they could've lost it

We filed on February 23, 2015 (Overnight Mail) and got the electronic confirmation of receipt for the 797 on March 5, 2013. I have updated out timeline. In our filing we are transitioning (Adjustment of Status) from B1/B2. We filed the I-485 (Adjustment of Status), I-130 (Alien Relative), I-131 Advance Parole), G-1145; I-765 (EAD); G-325A; I-693 (Medical Examination) & I-864 (Affidavit of Support) in a concurrent filing. Not sure how long the process will take, since every case is different. I am hoping that it goes by pretty quick so I can electronically file my taxes. Good luck to everyone!

Don't understand why you think this AOS process is holding you up from filing your 2014 tax return.

Final filing date for 2014 tax return is 15 April 2015.

You aren't going to have a green card by that date, and probably not even an EAD/AP card.

And neither is needed to file 2014 tax return.

It might have something to do with the EIC or any other credits You don't get the credits if your not a resident alien. But you can always file and then amend the 2014 return.

But Leo is correct if your waiting you may not get your GC before the 15th.

As a tax professional I would suggest filing by deadline and then amend if you were waiting for any of the credits.

I also thought the same as you and I went to the IRS in Miami (January 2015) to get a Tax Identification Number (TIN) and the IRS representative told me that I could not get one unless I submit my current year tax documentation and supporting documents for marriage and identification. I explained to him that the rules did not say I needed to do this and the TIN application form instructions never mentioned this at all. I explained to him the whole purposed of this was to be able to file my our joint tax return for 2014 electronically. He said that in his computer it tells him that I need to comply with what he originally told me to do. We can come back when we complete our 2014 return and submit the TIN application with the tax submittal in the Miami office, then the Miami office will review, assign a TIN and send it to the main office.

Well, I was a bit surprised by this and so we left without getting anywhere. I can always get an extension if I need it. I don't owe any taxes, so I am not worried about filing by April 15. I suspect I will have the EAD sometime at the end of this month, if not, I'll get an extension. I was not sure what to make of this guy. I thought he was wrong, but it could be that I do not understand their internal procedures. Nevertheless, good luck to everyone. It is definitely a journey.

Filed our package containing I-130, I-485 and I-765 today on March 7th. It is supposed to be delivered on Monday. Now the long wait begins.

Codeblue, I got an ITIN for my husband 2 years ago so we can file jointly. All you need is a completed tax return (leaving the spot where you would put the itin blank or write in applied) fill out a W7 and submit with your tax return...take all completed documents to your local IRS office with your id's and marriage cert and they will submit it for you and you will receive an itin in the mail.
