Pregnant Chinese moms are flocking stateside to give birth, lured by rules that grant American citizenship to anyone born on U.S. soil. A booming birth tourism industry has sprouted from coast to coast to cater to growing interest -- in 2012, about 10,000 Chinese women gave birth in the U.S., more than double the 4,200 in 2008, according to Chinese state media.

Many of the families want an American kid because a foreign passport could be the family's ticket out of China if they grow weary of pollution or food safety scares. President Xi Jinping's widespread anti-corruption campaign has given rich Chinese yet another reason to be on edge.

"If things become economically or politically uncertain in one's country of origin, the children have a place to come to," said Leti Volpp, a law professor at the University of California, Berkeley. The children can "then sponsor their parents when they turn 21."

The desire to leave China is especially pronounced among the wealthy. Almost two-thirds of Chinese with more than 10 million yuan ($1.6 million) in the bank have emigrated, or are planning to, according to a Hurun report released last year.

nothing new here.

I read it a few years back and had discussion with my husband. But I am wondering why this is already widely known for years and there are still people doing so. Is the government secretly allowed it or they just don't care at all? That's a big question.

I'd be willing to bet money that's not what the 14th amendment was intended for.

My husband still upset about my B-2 visa was refused just because I was dating him and yet these people can easily obtain a visa, come here, and claiming a citizenship for their babies.

Foreign people come to US for medical treatment all the times.

If the chinese could afford the child birth fees in US, then they should be allowed in too.

The reason they choose US is because the perk -> US citizenship for their baby.

If any of the Europe countries offer Jus Soli, like US does, then the chinese will flock over there too.

I support US to end the automatic birthright citizenship but I don't think the US will do it.

The feds are doing something about it:

At least the Chinese enter the US legally, and pay for the hospital bill.

The illegals from Mexico they have perfected the art of coming into US illegally, or bringing their kids in illegally, or going to Hospital and having kids here and never paying the bill.

They overburden the school system, overburden the power grid by living 10 to 15 people in a small house, they get free food, free education, free housing, etc.....

Yes, I agreed for the last statement.

But entered the U.S. legally does not mean you can do whatever you want by using a flaw in the system. Just because you have money it does not mean you are allowed to "cheated".

It's been for years and the U.S. government should have imposed an enforcement very strict and this article is pretty new. It means, they are still doing it.

I believe Canada offers Jus Soli as well and they have a good healthcare system there as far as my knowledge.

Actually I read that too. That's what I have been wondered the percentage of Chinese people would choose between Canada or the U.S. to give a birth. And any other options are available which country is more favor for them. And of course the benefits.

And then they wait in line all night and buy all the iPhones to send back to China so the rest of us have to wait for months to get one.

Hmm...these stories are always sensationalized to one side to attract readers.

What about the American men that wanted Chinese babies...???

For pregnant Chinese women to have a baby in US,

they would have to come to US perhaps few months early

as I'm not sure how easily they can get tourist visa late in their pregnancy.

And for them to be able to find a place to stay, pay for all the living expenses

and the hospital bills...this is not something ordinary Chinese women can do

as they only make in general 5% to 20% of US salary.

Some figures and facts are not adding up here.

That said, I wonder how many Mexican pregnant women are doing this??

It is not sensational, actually. It's been reported on the news for years. I believe there are some women from another countries doing it as well. But since Chinese are seem easily to get an approval for a tourist visa, it might be the one that attracted attention.
