(Reuters) - A woman was shot and killed at a Walmart store in northern Idaho on Tuesday and local media reported that the gun went off when her toddler pulled a handgun from her purse and discharged it accidentally.

Lieutenant Stu Miller of the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office said on Twitter that a woman in her late 20s was killed in a shooting at the Walmart in Hayden.

"Prelim investigation shows shooting was accidental," Miller said in a tweet. Hayden is located in Kootenai County, north of Coeur d'Alene.

Miller did not say on Twitter who fired the gun and could not immediately be reached by phone.

Local KREM-TV reported that the woman had been shopping with four children when one of them, who was believed to be about two years old, reached into her purse and grabbed the gun.

"A very sad incident occurred at our store today in Hayden involving the death of a female customer. We are working with the Kootenai Sheriff's department as they investigate what happened," Walmart spokeswoman Brooke Buchanan said.

Buchanan said the store had been closed and would remain so until further notice.

What a damn shame.

I'm assuming the safety was off. If she was carry it around the safety off she's lucky one of her kids didn't accidentally get shot. A tragedy no doubt.

Her irresponsibility cost her her life and who knows what it will do to her child's life.

It may not have had a safety, and even if it did a 2 year old could flip it off.

If you're relying on a mechanical safety to stand as the only obstacle between yourself and tragedy, you shouldn't operate anything more powerful than a ballpoint pen. Spooky's dead on: this was her own negligence catching up with her.

No matter how you look at it, she was careless or had a mental lapse and did not have the weapon secure and under her control. As I've said a hundred times, owning a firearm is a big responsibility and a momentary lapse of awareness can result in a tragic accident.

Sounds like the kid is a better shot than most Police Officers.

Straight forward how she should have handled it. Keep the purse with the loaded gun away from the two year old!!

Doesn't matter what type of firearm she had.

It's a damn good thing she didn't have a poodle in her purse. Who knows how many people would've have died then?

Oh my god it will effect the kid the most when he/she grows up , i would not blame the kid and he/she should be forgiven it's clearly an accident. Hopefully he/she will be fine when he/she grows up.
