Comedian Joan Rivers died in a New York hospital Thursday afternoon, a week after suffering cardiac arrest during a medical procedure, her daughter said.

"She passed peacefully at 1:17 p.m. surrounded by family and close friends," Melissa Rivers said in a written statement.

Rivers, 81, had been on life support at Manhattan's Mount Sinai hospital, where she was taken after she stopped breathing at the Yorkville Endoscopy clinic last Thursday.

The outpatient clinic is now being investigated by the New York State Department of Health, spokesman James O'Hara said.

Rest in Peace Miss Rivers. Fashion will never be the same without you letting people know how jacked up they looked.

I have some pretty strong opinions about what Joan Rivers eventually became, but originally, she was a force to be reckoned with. She was a trailblazer, bold and unafraid and helped pave the way for future women in comedy.

It's a shame she lost that in the last twenty years or so, and it's a shame that she spewed hateful and offensive BS, but the good she did for the world of comedy can't be understated.

Liked her in her early years, but the last 20 years or so she was nothing but annoying.

She had an interview this year where she just walked out on the reporter I remember. I think she just sort of lost it in the end, maybe it was all the plastic surgery.

Annoying and downright cruel. Her early stand up is some of the best, but how she went from that to yelling at women and calling them pigs, I'll never know.

I think she conformed to the demands of society hence the insults she'd hurl at folks and kids. Edited by aaydrian

Geez, the politically correct police are out in force in this thread. In their vision of society, nobody can joke about anybody or anything. How dull. Nothing is OK with them except just plain vanilla, white bread. Lighten up...

She was a comedian, a trailblazer. A great one.

Can't you just let her rest in peace?

And we'll probably never see the likes of her again in our lifetime. Godspeed Joan.

Just because someone's a trailblazer and just because someone dies does not mean that the inappropriate, offensive, downright cruel things they said/did should go ignored. She was racist, transphobic and a million other things. Joan Rivers never respected anyone in death (her joke about Amy Winehouse right after she died comes to mind) ... yet somehow she's supposed to receive something she never gave? Please.

Where were you when Joan decided to say that Palestinian children deserved to die? Hm?

And we'll probably never see the likes of her again in our lifetime.

If we're lucky.
