Hey guys! As many of you know my husband is finally home!! Well, a week into him being here I'm grandmother in Mexico has passed this morning and we are making plans to drive into Mexico for the funeral. Our question is the only thing that we have is his passport with the CR1 visa in it. Will that be enough for him to come back into the US or do we have to wait until his gets is physical green card card in the mail which will probably be another 3 weeks??

Thanks in advance!

Sorry to hear about your loss. The CR-1 with the entry stamp will act as an I-551 (GC) until the plastic card arrives. I am assuming you went to ELIS and paid the GC fee and are just waiting for it to be processed. Either way the CR-1 visa stamped at POE is all he needs to travel.

Sorry for your loss. As mentioned above the visa and the stamp together serve as a temporary GC for all intents and purposes, including travel, working, applying for SSN, DL, and anything else that you need a GC for.

This does not constitute legal advice.

Yes. You definitely can, but show up prepared to argue since some DMV reps are clueless.

We had to really fight and it took 2 days of going to the DMV before we were allowed to use the I-551 in the passport. They had to clear it with some sort of immigration specialist they used? Bizarre.

Wow. I'm not surprised. DMV reps are so clueless that I once encountered one who thought that a US passport was issued by USCIS. You really do have to argue with them sometimes because even the supervisors are slow.
