Hello,

I just got engaged last week to my American Fiancé :dancing: And we are starting our paperwork. I was just looking for some advice regarding the declaration of how we met. Our story is quite simple, met online, then in person and have been dating since August 2013. I just want to make sure we do everything right.

Thank you for your help!

A simple statement works fine. If it fits in the space on the form, then even better because you won't need to create an attachment sheet to answer that question. I would be sure to include the place and date of visit together in person and provide supporting evidence to prove the meeting.

That's how many of us got started also.

Keep good record of the following and submit them to I-129F petition.

1. Pictures taken together.

2. Receipts from airfare, hotel, rental car, currency exchange, shows, meals, etc. during meeting in person.

3. Phone records (even Skype calls)

4. Other communication records (Skype, email, etc.)

5. Also you'll run into this IMB (International marriage broker) thing in your I-129F petition,

that's going to be pretty rare, especially online sites used between Canada and US.

VJ site is THE BEST out there. Frankly I think it's better than paying someone $500 to do the paperwork.

So keep checking back here.

Best wishes

My fiance just wrote:

We met playing scrabble online. We met in person for the first time in Houston, TX in March 2012.

It fit in the box fine and we were approved with no RFEs.

We submitted copies of boarding passes and passport stamps, the receipt from a hotel we stayed at with both our names on, and 4 photos of us together which I dated on the back.

Good luck! :)

You've got it wrong. The declaration is how you met in person.....not how you came to meet first time.

As of Dec 7, 2009, now Zero miles apart (literally)!

You got it wrong. You are supposed to have the exact day in August. They will be suspicious if you do not even know the day you guys met.

I never said i didn't know the date we met... I have a plane ticket for it. I doubt they will have anything to be suspicious about.

so, what happens if two people met back when they were children, are they expected to remember the exact day they met 15, 20 years ago?

question 34a says to "describe the circumstances under which you met" - it does not say to list the exact date. sure, if you can remember the date you met, you can note it down. if you can't, and there's a good reason for it (like a lot of time has passed, or you were on holiday and can remember the week you met, but not the exact day), you will be fine too. i know i didn't list the exact day my then-fiance and i met when filing our petition, and we are now married and happily living together

i wish people would not take on such an aggressive tone when posting. you can give constructive advice without putting someone else down, or declaring they are wrong (especially when they are not).

That's rubbish. My fiance just wrote 'March 2012' - we know the date but he didn't put it and we were approved with no RFEs.

OP, just make sure you include passport stamps and boarding passes within the last 2 years and you'll be fine :)

I really don't think an exact date will matter. I met my fiancee in September 1994, but neither of us can remember the exact day. So, we just wrote that we first met in Sep 1994, and developed a friendship, and, later, relationship, after...

#######, that must mean they won't approve our K-1 VISA, since we just put down month and year.
