Certified Copy of Marriage Certificate for AOS Interview?

I am super confused about this "Certified copy of marriage certificate" for the AOS Interview.

I have done some research on this site and it seems like it isn't really clear what you need to bring to the interview.

I have the "original" from the court with my husband and my, and our witnesses and magistrate's signature.

It has the seal as well as a sticker with a barcode on it.

My question is, do I absolutely need to get a certified copy of this for the interview, or can I just bring this original.

I am going to the office in Centennial Colorado... if that makes a difference.

The reason I am asking instead of just going to get it is because our interview is on Wednesday, in 3 days.... and I am not sure if the Denver County Clerk and Recorder will issue a certified copy on the spot.

Thanks in advance for all of your help.

The Denver County clerk will issue certified copies on the spot for a nominal fee. Get several and just keep them in your files in case you ever need to show them again.

If you can't make it to get the certified copies then take the original to the interview.

Wow! Thanks so much for such clear advice. My husband can go tomorrow morning and get a bunch.

Thanks again! Have a great Sunday on this Independence Day weekend!

What you are calling an "original" IS actually a certified copy. The true "original" is kept at the office that issued it. The thing you have is exactly what you need for the interview.

Exactly. That was a clerk told me at courthouse.

Maybe. I have the actual original Marriage Certificate that I keep in a safe place. It has the original signatures of myself, my wife, the witnesses and the judge plus the top of it is the Marriage License. I took that up to the Clerk and Recorder's office right after we were married and received 6 certified copies right there on the spot and they took the original to be recorded. I received the original back in a few days. This was in Jefferson County, Colorado, and I believe the OP has the same from Denver County. I would get a few more certified copies made--just to have for who knows why--and take the original and a certified copy to the AOS interview. That is what I did and they kept another copy after looking at the original as I had given them a certified copy with the application.

Good luck,

Dave

Maybe. I would take along another copy just to be safe. They did take another copy from us. I do not know why, but the IO did. Always better to have something and not need it then to wish you had brought it to the interview.

Good luck,

Dave

I was confused too , I did some research and based on my friend who got her green card.

If you had a civil ceremony, the marriage certificate you got on the day of marriage issued by a city clerk is good enough. No need to order extra copies. My friend brought the one issued at wedding day to the interview and it was good.

If you had a non civil ceremony, ( religious marriage ) then the one issued by your priest or rabbi or whatever you call is not good , you need to order one from the city / county.

Ya I am thinking of getting my husband to go to the court house to get a copy... Just in case! We have made it this far without any issues. I would hate to get there on Wednesday and them tell me that I should have had a copy.

I am assuming though, that this one that I have is enough. But like I said you never know.

I only submitted a photo copy of my marriage certificate. I think maybe that's why I need to bring the original.

You provide a copy of your marriage certificate when you file. If you have an interview, then you bring the 'original' you made the copy from. You should bring originals of all important documents you sent copies of with the AOS paperwork.

This should be in a FAQ somewhere too, as it seems to confuse quite a bit of people. A certified copy means that it is an actual, legal copy of the original, primary document. You need a copy of the marriage certificate you get from the court after your marriage has been registered and recorded. It usually has a stamp or seal and the signature of the county clerk on it. That is what makes it a certified copy. You need to send a photocopy of the certified marriage certificate you receive from the court. If you have an interview, then bring the actual certified copy you received from the court that you sent them a photocopy of.

Maybe this explains it better > http://marriage.about.com/od/marriagelaws/g/marriagecertif.htm

Can you get it online? I wrote this a few days ago. Maybe it will help: Hi Everyone

I just read a few posts about the time delay getting a certified copy of the marriage certificate for AOS. We faced the same dilemma. However, there might be an on-line system in your state now. I was told that there would be a 4-8 WEEK wait to get the "Official" Certificate of Marriage. I then learned that Hawaii had started a system where the wedding officiant could enter the information online. We had an "unofficial" copy available for download in about two days. We chose to submit the unofficial certificate along with a printout from the Hawaii Department of Health showing the posted time frame and risk an RFE. We ordered 5 certified copies. The actual certified copies came long before the 4-8 week window and we had them ready at the interview. The consular never asked for them. The web copies were accepted. We now have several cool souvenirs!

I hope that this option helps some of you. Good luck!
