I have a completely off topic question, but when ppl get their GC approved through VAWA, who is financially responsible for them?

Well, they are responsible for themselves, essentially.

While their VAWA is accepted and under review, petitioners are eligible for some types of aid like food stamps, etc.

Later on with an EAD and, ultimately, Green Card, they will be allowed to work and earn their own income. They may also qualify for a broader spectrum of aid.

They may be able to secure child support and/or spousal support and/or an equitable division of marital assets.

However, in the end, it is their own responsibility to figure things out, request what they're eligible for, fight for what they deserve and get their own life in order.

After receiving the GC the green card holder is like any other person with GC, they can't apply for any public benefits (food stamps, medicaid etc) until they have lived in the U.S. for five years with GC.

When waiting Vawa decision the alien can apply for medicaid and food stamp, not all States provide these things for who has a prima facie, but the question is about who is responsible AFTER receiving the GC.

True, many federally funded public benefits are not available to GC holders until they've had the GC for five years.

However, there are State, County and City benefits available to GC holders who qualify without having to wait five years.

And, I believe, that there are federal benefits (housing, unemployment, etc.) that area available to GC holders without having to wait five years.
