My USC wife married her ex-husband in the country of Jamaica they came back to New York as husband and wife.

My wife says that because her ex did not notify the authorities in New York of their marriage in Jamaica that she is not legally married in USA and therefore legally able to marry me.

Is the above true or not? Is she a bigamist?

If my wife and I went on vacation to Jamaica, would the Jamaican government recognize her marriage to her ex and not ours?

Note: They (my wife and her ex) have not filed any divorce in the US or Jamaica.

She is legally married in the US as well (and I am guessing most of the countries in the world - think about it, else we would be able to marry one person from each country in the world if our marriage is only valid country-wise). She has to divorce in Jamaica before she can marry you or anyone else.

hi

not true, any marriage is legal, she has a marriage certificate, so she needs a divorce. so you married her without her divorcing her ex? that's bigamy and your marriage in the US isn't valid

you don't have to notify anyone in the US, marriage is valid anywhere that it has taken place. you needed to wait until she divorced her ex. your marriage isn't valid and she has committed bigamy

Bigmaist

Another USC getting married in a foreign country and then being too lazy to divorce and committing fraud.

Thread number 2 in one week.

Yes, she is a bigamist and your marriage is invalid.

Let her get a divorce first and if she is not willing then run because this will not end well. Guaranteed.

This is a complete mess I have two young children with my wife/girlfriend.

This has not been a good marriage from basically day one. I have argued with her that she sees me has a boyfriend or even shared house buddies. I got suspicious when she did not register my son name in my name, (he is now).

We got married in New York and had big party for all the family. I think she is a naive bigamist, so would not be prosecuted.

I am ready for divorce but confusingly I am not married so I do not have to. I do have a legal New York marriage certificate but this is worthless.

Could I remarry in the future? this is so confusing.

If your wife failed to obtain a dissolution of her former marriage before she married you then she isn't your wife and you aren't married.

She is still married to her ex husband who really is her husband, although she is naive or is deliberately lying to everyone.

No, I meant to ask if you came to the US because you were married, or the other way around.

No she is US citizen, I came here and married her.

Yeah, you aren't married and she's a bigamist. Sorry.
