Hopefully neither. I don't see how the US could avoid getting mixed up in this. Which really would mean, China won't do anything. They can not hold their on on or under the water at this point. Or in the air, which is what you need at sea.

The only thing that has ever been on the islands was a Japanese fish plant that was closed as WW2 started to heat up.

They are strategically important in terms of their location plus potentially large oil and gas reserves in the surrounding waters.

Most importantly there is an endemic species of mole called the Senkaku mole apparently, everyone loves moles (except gardeners)!
