Hello all!

I have been reading conflicting statements for calculating the 125% Poverty Guideline. Specifically for the I-134 Affidavit of Support Form, for the 2013-14 year. Currently, on the I-864P Form from USCIS (http://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/files/form/i-864p.pdf). It states that for a household of two (myself and fiancee), the 125% of HHS Poverty Guideline is $19,387.

Does this mean that I simply cannot make less than this ($19,387) amount annually? Or... Does it mean that I am supposed to multiply this number by 125%? So, (Poverty Guideline) x (1.25) = 125% of Poverty Guideline. When I do the math this way, I get a product of $24,234. Then I add $24,234 to $19,387 for a sum of $43,621. Isn't this the correct way to calculate 125% above the poverty line? Which is correct?

I am pretty good with math, but his word problem is lacking clear instructions. I would greatly appreciate some real-world feedback from you kind people. smile.png Thank You.

Correct way is simply to add 25% to the poverty guideline (hence, 125%, not 100%) so as you've outlined, the calculation of (poverty guideline) x (1.25) would be the number you are looking for. $43,621 would actually be 225% as it is double the base plus an additional 25%. Hope that helps ;-)

Thank you :) I think I was just over-thinking it. On the I-864 it had it outlined, $15,510 is 100%, and $19,347 is 125%. This stuff just gets a little confusing sometimes, and I appreciate your quick replies. So $19,347 is bare minimum then?

Yep, that's correct for a household size of 2 :-)

you are correct, you can not make less than $19,387 amount annually. it means your minimum income must be that.

You can make less than that. What it means in terms of the I-134 (and then the I-864) is that if your current income meets or surpasses that level, then you don't need a co-sponsor. If your current income is below that level, than you need a co-sponsor and/or assets.
