Anyone have info personally on how long the fingerprints take to get back? I know what the website says. Just wondering what people's personal experiences have been lately. That is in Australia.

well when i did mine i called Canberra where it gets sent and told them my situation i needed them quick and the guy understood and said just right ATTENTION : then his name and as soon as he gets it he will send it to me asap, well i ended up getting it about 3 days later :) what a nice bloke. normally can take a month . So if you want it asap just call Canberra where they process them there should be a number on the form And explain your situation that you have been away so long from your loved one and you really need it as quick as possible

  • 2 weeks later...

Hello...

I am based in Brisbane and I had to have wet fingerprints taken. I was told by the Police Officer taking the prints that whilst they have the digital facility, it is only linked to QLD files (at this stage) and not the rest of the country. She said they have to send the wet fingerprints to the other States/Territories to have them checked.

I had mine done at a local police station and it took me about 2 weeks to receive the National Police Certificate back - it cost me $181.

I have just been booked for my interview (next week as it happens) and no RFE has been requested on the Certificate.

Hope this helps :)

Oh my goodness. HELP!! my brain is frazzled. Can someone please tell me whether they filled out the form for a national police check online through the Australian Federal Police OR the one from police.gov?? So much confusing info here and everywhere.

The AFP one says it is only for spouse visas (amongst other things), but the K1 is a fiancée visa...so...does that mean I just use the police.gov form online instead, or is the fiancée visa considered the same thing??

Thank you for any help!! :)

This whole process is ridiculous, I've been told or read 3 different things on official websites etc. Here's what I did.

I went with the national fingerprint check after what I saw another user here post, I took a gamble and didn't want to risk copping a RFE because I only had a name check completed. I also e-mailed the embassy and received a reply 7 days later telling me the national name check certificate was all that was required. According to the Sydney Embassy page, and based on my history, I would have needed 4 police certs. One each for VIC, NSW, QLD and the UK. I'm glad all they do is a national check now...the embassy really needs to update that page!

As I'm in NSW I used this on-line form: https://npcoapr.police.nsw.gov.au/aspx/dataentry/Introduction.aspx. If you can't use the on-line form then you need to print off a copy of the P799 form and fill that out and take it to the police station with your ID, this is also where you make your payment. Don't forget your receipt.

I submitted the online form (make sure you take note of your document ID, I don't have a printer so saved a local copy and sent it to my phone so I had a reference), called the police station and went in for my finger prints. If your local police station has prisoner holding cells then you need to call them first before you go there to make sure there's no prisoners in the cells so you can get your digital prints completed. The digital machine is a tempremental thing too. If you are having ink or wet prints done you can do this at any police station.

Almost 4 weeks after submitting my digital fingerprints I received a letter telling me that they failed and I needed to do it again. So after a lot of profanity I went back and had my ink prints done. The police gave me the prints and I forwarded them to Criminal Records myself, which I apparently wasn't allowed to do. From what I've been told we aren't allowed to have a copy of our own fingerprints. The very helpful woman at criminal records pushed it through in 2 days for me and rang me yesterday to say she had sent it to my home address.

Something to note. Every police officer I spoke to had a different idea about what needed to be done with these prints. Make sure you tell them it's for a national fingerprint check and needs to be sent to criminal records in Parramatta (If you're in NSW of course, otherwise make sure you know where the criminal records department is in your state), I told one officer it was for a USA visa and he tried to get me to contact the embassy and get a form for the FBI instead...strange.

Sorry for waffling on...I hope some of that helps...

Your 'waffling on' is the clearest information I have received :) I ended up doing mine yesterday after receiving a reply from the embassy also. I did exactly what you did, according to their instructions. I also had the same experience with speaking to people supposedly meant to be able to tell me the correct information...all different!!! And mostly incorrect, as I now know. I'm keeping the email from the embassy as evidence too. Oh, yes..the police station where I went did digital prints and went to hand me the hard copy! They had no idea what to do and said they would call the parramatta office to see what to do with them. I wasn't too worried by this because they assured me the digital prints were sent off with the online form anyway. Fingers crossed that they were done correctly (the machine did say they were, but as we all know from this visa process, who knows :P

Thank you so much for your reply, it is much appreciated. So much wading through misinformation from authorities, it's a wonder we aren't all crazy!!

Thank you for making this thread, I didn't know about the fingerprints haha.

I applied for and received a National Police Check certificate but it was a name check only. Will I just need to restart the whole process except apply for the fingerprints this time? And I have lived in 4 Aussie states, I'm guessing the NPC will cover all of them?

How early is too early to apply for the NPC, my fiance and I only received our NOA2 two days ago, should I wait until I get packet 3 to apply for it or can I do it now?

Thanks everyone :)

If you still live in Australia, the police check is valid for 12 months, so you are good to get them now.

It has to be based on your fingerprints. Unfortunately that means doing it all over again. The AFP National Police Check covers all states. There are different methods of having a NPC done for the different states, so I suggest you look up the AFP website, or check your current states police website for how you go about getting your fingerprints done and what forms you need.

Hope this helps.
