I did get it from Garda earlier this year. But you cannot open the envelope as it will become invalid for the interview.

I gave them addresses where I used to live in the country.

An address was incomplete (couldn't remember) but the officer said it's ok with just as far as you remember.

Call or visit your local Garda.

When I did this 5 years ago, only the current address was on the actual cert, but you had to give past addresses to obtain the cert.

have you actually seen the certificate? I just returned from my local garda station and I didnt have the letter from the consulate that i have it but the girl has sent in on for me. It was a simple white form that i filled out. Is this the same one you had to fill out? did you need to bring a letter from the consulate as proof that you needed the cert, because im just working ahead here and i havent recieved that letter. I know though, that the NVC had sent it already and its on its way.

Hi, I have the certificate here with me but never opened the envelope.

So the answer is "no".

I did everything with Cork Garda over the phone and E-mail.

The officer told me to write a memo on:

1. Your addresses in Ireland, with period mentioned

2. The reason you need the certificate

3. Name, current address, etc.

and send it via E-mail together with an image of your passport.

You should be able to get it ahead of time. And it's always better to move ahead.

Just explain an officer that you are in the US K-1 visa process.

You might be able to show them the NOA1 and 2.

I just wrote " to obtain a US visa to marry a US citizen" for the reason.

Did your Garda officer tell you, "you will have the cert in xx weeks"?

A couple of days is great!

I guess a foreigner requesting cert from overseas and Irish citizen doing so is a different thing.

Put search words in the search window at the top right, like " Garda certificate" to get some results.

Found this:

http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/404342-ireland-how-do-i-get-a-police-certificate-and-how-long-does-it-take/

You could also ask info in Irish Portal of VJ.

Good luck for your journey !!!

I have never heard that you can not open the envelope, I have mine opened as it came with a lot of other post and did not say on the envelope where it was from so naturally I opened all my post.

(I also opened my swiss one as it did not specify what was in the envelope and I often get mail from Switzerland)

Does this mean I need to get new ones?

I also opened them- some countries require that you do not open the envelope but I have not heard this about Ireland or Switzerland (funny, we had to get the same police certs!), unless something changed in the 5 years since I got mine.

Yes Japanese police certificates are sealed so they'll become invalid once opened.

Wasn't sure about Irish ones so I just extended the same rule.

You can check this with your Garda officers as well.

Thanks queen Penguin !

hey, does it include in the certificate any of your previous addresses? or does it state just a bare minimum of information? what is exactly outlined in it?

If you could give me a brief explanation, that would be so helpful!

I had to give my previous addresses when I filled in the request form, but the cert that came back just had my current address, DoB (which they got wrong first time, made me two years younger than I am, I didn't notice till the CO pointed it out at the visa interview!), and that I had no arrests or convicetions, signed by the superintendent.
