You could've asked this question in the thread you already made about SSNs... just saying.

By looking at your timeline you can when you are approved get your GC. We did it after a K-1 visa at the same time as applying for the GC.

The IR-1/CR-1 is issued a stamp in their passport along with the visa that acts like an I-551 or GC. They are already approved for the GC when the visa was issued, That is one of the main differences between the K-1 and IR-1/CR-1 visa--no AOS to file after entering the US as it s done before the visa is issued.

OP: Take thee to the nearest SSA office (link provided in the other thread you started) with your passport, the visa and stamp to prove you have the I-551, the SS-5 form and another form proving ID and age like your BC (just encase as some places want two forms of ID, one for ID and one for age and others will accept the passport for both) and apply for the SSN. Typically you should wait 2 weeks after entering to get the SAVE data base updated. If they have problems looking you up, do not let them do a verification with the USCIS or DHS as that will take weeks. Leave and go back a few days later and then have them try looking you up using the A#.

Good luck,

Dave

supposedly they sometimes mail it to your address as soon as you POE. We went twice to the SS office to request my husband's card. He ended up receiving it after his GC, it took over a month (maybe even 2). When I did my taxes last year, we had to submit a couple times with copies of his SSN card because he wasn't 'in the system' yet.

If youcan't get a SSN now you can definitely ask for a tax ID number and that is enough for taxes

As soon as you arrive in the USA.

I suggest that your husband file an extension for 2012 if you were married in 2012. That way he can claim you on his taxes after you arrive in the USA. He needs your SS number in order to claim you. The extension would be required if you do not yet have your SS number upon the tax deadline in April.

My wife came on a CR1 visa in April and she had her SS number within 2 weeks after arrival.

You can go to a local SS location and try to obtain one right there if you have not received one in the mail shortly after arrival in the USA. (within 2 weeks after arrival)

You can apply approx 2 weeks after arrival. You only need your passport with visa. If after two weeks of applying you receive the card in the mail you can go to the office to get your number which should have been assigned. My husband hasn't received his card after 3 weeks but we went to the office and got his number because I needed it for bank/credit cards/insurance etc. He will pick up card at office in a week because we're afraid it will get lost in the mail again.
