Israeli kids watch "5 Broken Cameras"

I posted the trailer to this film about a year ago. It's an award-winning documentary about non-violent Palestinian resistance to the illegal occupation, the separation Wall, and the illegal settlements - specifically, the weekly demonstrations conducted by the residents of the West Bank village of Bil'in, protesting the seizure of their village lands by the Israelis to build the Wall and expand settlements.

Now, the Israeli co-director of the film is screening it for Israeli teenagers. He is using it as an educational tool to try to raise awareness among Israelis - most of whom have never heard of Bil'in, or don't really know (or believe) what is going on there.

The people of Bil'in have been demonstrating peacefully for more than 6 years against the seizure of their land for construction of the Israeli Wall which surrounds illegal settlements in the area. After years of court battles, even the Israeli Supreme Court upheld that the path of the Wall across Bil'in lands was illegal, and must be re-routed. However, the Israeli army (which gets its orders from the Israeli government) refuses to abide by the Supreme Court decision.

Many of the protestors have been arrested, wounded, and even killed by Israeli soldiers using brutal force to suppress these demonstrations. The soldiers become especially enraged by the presence of cameras, and internationals. Witnesses are kryptonite, and they know it.

Through all of this, the people of Bil'in have been amazingly resilient and creative with their protests. Several documentaries have been made about them. This is footage from "Bil'in Habibti" (Bil'in My Love) which illustrates their continuing sumud ("steadfastness")

"5 Broken Cameras" has just been nominated for an Oscar in the Best Documentary-Feature category, along with an Israeli film called "The Gatekeepers," which is a series of interviews with former heads of Shabak (Shin Bet - Israel's internal version of the Mossad) who are very critical of Israeli government policy.

This is an unprecedented event. These nominations are very strong, very clear signals that represent the sea change in the discussion in the US about the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. This is evidence that high-level insiders in the American media/entertainment industry - the people who vote for the Oscars, many of whom are Jewish - are thinking about Israel-Palestine in a radically different way than in the past.

You may be the last one on your block to smell the winds of change. Still, eventually they will reach even the hinterlands of New Jersey. One day, you will realize why it wasn't such a wise choice.

Try Cedars - it was deemed just as good in the taste test at Cook's Magazine (who are no scrubs when it comes to gourmandism). And for those worried about spending money wisely, Cedars is also less expensive :wink:
