I'm going to apply for my American citizenship soon and I know I have the option to change my name when I do. As a gift to my step-dad (he's been my 'dad' for over 30 years), I'm thinking about changing my last name to his, but I want to know how this will affect my Canadian documentation/citizenship. Do I have to legally change my name in Canada too or do I just send the paperwork of my name change here in the USA and re-apply for all my Canadian documentation (SIN, Passport, etc...).

Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks.

I don't know the answer, but this is kind of cool, and nice.

If you don;t change it in Canada it will not be changed there. So for example I am known by my married name in the US and all my id is in that but I never changed my name officially back in Canada on my SIN (for example). All I had to do for non official stuff (like a Cdn bank account I maintain) was show my marriage cert to change my name and i also changed my name on my CDN Passport by providing the appropriate documentation they as for - I didn't want to go 'official' and actually change my Cdn birth cert - but maybe you do.

So the answer is - you don't have to - I can always provide my marriage cert at a later date but I don't personally have any need to change everything back in Canada.

I don't know Canadian law about this, but I would be very surprised if Canada would recognize something a foreign national (US citizen) has done in a foreign country (the United States of America).

I changed my name when becoming an American as part of the naturalization process. All my American documents reflect this new name, but it has no influence on my other 2 countries of citizenship, both of which do not even allow a name change. So I have two different identities as well, which is actually something I embrace. It helps to keep things separate.

Transferred to your case, you would be an American in the United States with your American name, and a Canadian in Canada with your Canadian name. Outside of Canada you can be whatever you want to be.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

Since it is a legal name change as opposed to assuming a name through marriage you will probably have to complete the full application. http://www.ontario.ca/en/information_bundle/individuals/119600.html

If you want your birth certificate changed you probably need to go through the process but it doesn't appear to be very costly or time-consuming.
