AOS interview experience Milwaukee

Hey guys!

Throughout my AOS journey, I never found any relevant posts about Milwaukee, so I wanted to make sure and leave a legacy for the coming generations.

My spouse and I were a very straight-forward case, so we didn't use a lawyer. We drove to Milwaukee with my mother-in-law as we had read that relatives are sometimes admitted and she's one of those magnificent ice-breakers. We arrived maybe half an hour early and waited for about 45 minutes after our appointment time. They let my mother-in-law into the waiting area with us and one more couple had a parent with them. My mom-in-law was not admitted to our interview, but the other couple's parent was.

We were sworn in, the IO (the only lady of the three who were working at the time) asked for our IDs, asked both of us for our names and address and went through some of the questions on form i485, as she was making notes directly on the form with a red pen.

As my spouse and I were living in my homecountry for most of last year, we couldn't provide the USCIS with a document showing how much he earns per year. We had just a proof of the hourly rate and the amount of hours worked. So even though this added up to more than the poverty limits, we did send in an affidavit from my in-laws as joint sponsors. As our IO was going through the forms, I asked whether they were going to use them as joint sponsors and she said "it won't be necessary".

She wrote down my new job and once she finished all the form questions, she said she realizes we haven't been married for long, but asked if we had any joint assets we'd like to show her. All we had was our joint accounts and our car insurance. No bills, no rental agreement, nothing more than that. Then she asked if we've ever been on any trips together, aside from my home country. We'd traveled some in America and Europe and we keep a scrap book, so we had tickets and boarding passes from many flights, but given the choice she preferred to see pictures instead. As we were telling her where the pictures were from and started discussing about the location of one of the pictures, she just leaned back and said "You guys are married, alright."

Then she told us about the ROC rules and wished us a good day. My EAD/AP card was in my passport, so she saw it when she first opened it, but didn't take it away. I still have it. I'll clip off the edge of it when I get my green card and add it to our scrap book

We didn't have a watch, so I can't tell you how long it took and most of it was her writing things down. The status has yet to change online. We stopped receiving emails and texts after our first NOA, so I have to go and check on it personally every time. But I'm not worried. I did not get any "Big Brother is always watching" vibe from the IO, she was very respectful and humane. We were prepared for way worse.

For those of you who are starting their AOS journey right now, I'd recommend these videos to help you make sense of the forms: http://www.youtube.com/user/usimmigrationlawyer

As well as the information on this forum and following the thread specific to people who applied in the same month as you. Thanks to the April 2012 people and I hope to see you guys again in 2014. If anyone has any questions concerning Milwaukee in specific, you can pm me.

Good luck! Don't sweat it, this is likely the only exam in your life for which you know more than your examiner.

NICE ONEgood.gifgood.gifgood.gif

CONGRATULATIONS, HAPPY FOR THE BOTH OF YOUkicking.gifkicking.gifkicking.gif

Thanks! I forgot to mention two things: She did NOT ask for my birth certificate (just wanna mention that specifically, because I know many people are having a hard time getting one) and she said we're not likely to be invited for an interview during the ROC procedure. She said only a small percentage are called in randomly and unless we somehow get suspicious during those two years, they won't need to interview us.
