get her a library card.

Then use the online mango classes from yer library , all in the comfort of her home.

also can check out pimsleur audio cds (english for mandarin speakers - there are 2 levels)

I just got library cards for my wife and son. She has already met some more Chinese people while browsing in the library. She checked out a 6-CD English language conversation set and is learning from them. I will mention the pimsleur cds to her as you mentioned.

We live in union-controlled, Dem-controlled Seattle area. My wife is taking an ESL class at the local community college for $25, and is enjoying it. :thumbs:

YMMV.

My wife is one of about five who moved back to the Phoenix-area from China after our work assignment. All of them have taken some level of ESL classes at the local community college. Once you are married she should be able to enroll as an in-state/resident and they typically are pretty cheap. The biggest problem I have heard with some of these classes is they tend to learn more Spanish than English :devil:

re: library.

sorry, let me expound a bit.

first, get a library card.

second, walk around in the library (use yer feets), check out the esl section there, you should see a myriad of things there , from manuals to workbooks to actual books to audio cd sets. If you are lucky, you might find pimsleur audio cd sets there. FWIW, the older ones (circa 2001-2004) are easy to copy with Windows Media Player.

third, get online with the website of yer library - SEE if they are a subscriber to MANGO language services - MOST libraries are. Ya need a library card to see this stuff, creating an online account with the library, then maybe creating an account with MANGO (which is free).

fourth (for oral english) - get a few audiobooks, some of the old classics (CS Lewis, or Robert Louis Stevenson as examples). Play them on a CD player, similar to practicing karaoke. Helps to train the ear..

she already has a library card. this is more of a temporary solution and eventually she will need some to be more on the interaction level. i can only give her a few hours of lesson after work.

That has been our experience for my step-son. :thumbs:

Just got her on Mango. Mango is pretty good for a starter.

I have the full set of Pimsleur for English to Mandarinn. She can kind of use it backwards.

In Glendale Arizona, found ESL by Design, a small class, my wife is trying the program, very nice people.

In Arizona its hot hot hot.
