Reuters – 45 mins ago

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and civil rights groups launched a campaign on Wednesday to roll back "stand your ground" laws critics say led to the shooting death of Florida teenager Trayvon Martin.

The Second Chance on Shoot First campaign aims to reform or repeal laws on the use of deadly force in 25 states that Bloomberg called "a license to murder."

The laws "justify civilian gunplay and invite vigilante justice and retribution with disastrous results," Bloomberg told a news conference.

Others in the "Second Chance" effort include the National Urban League, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the National Action Network and the online group ColorOfChange.org.

"Stand your ground" laws allow people to use deadly force when they believe they are in danger of getting killed or suffering great bodily harm.

Martin, an unarmed 17-year-old, was shot by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman on February 26 in Sanford, Florida. Police declined to press charges against him, citing the law.

A Florida prosecutor was expected to announce a criminal charge against Zimmerman later on Wednesday.

Bloomberg blamed the passage of the "stand your ground" laws on the National Rifle Association and said they had contributed to an upturn in justifiable homicides.

The Second Chance campaign would be a grass-roots effort to roll back the laws or keep them from being passed, he said.

Florida state Senator Chris Smith told reporters lawmakers in his state were looking at reforming the law by removing "vigilante aspects" rather than outright repeal.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

After reading those two links up above I find it strange that the mayor of NYC would be focusing on the "Stand Your Ground Law". I mean is he for real or what?

That's from the article in the OP. I know of the NAACP, but I have never heard of the other two groups that are trying to get the "Stand Your Ground Law" in NYC so I did a google on them just now. Good ol racist Rev. Al is at it again.

I love how they call it a license to murder.. Every living and breathing human being already has that and there's not much anyone can do about it other than "retaliate" after the fact...

I'm curious as to how many people in NYC have died in result of the "Stand Your Ground Law" there compared to other gun related deaths in that city. I would love to see those numbers.

i live in corona, ny. i can testify that the cops here don't do F!

short story origin, the other street side was blasting music till 2am. around 12am i walk over to ask them lower the music in a polite manner.

i called 911 that i had been chased a block away. it was a young adult mexican that had chased me with a knife.

cops didn't arrive till 1.5 hrs later. they shout at me for calling 911! ironically, in a hour later there were a major arrests because the party w/ loud music turned into a wrestling arena.

during that night, i had slept with my samurai sword. fyi, this isn't a replica because i had sliced a 2.5inch wooden pole.

this has gotten me to thinking about owning a handgun gun now.

i was a proud supporter for bloomerg until he gave too much attention to the lobbyist.

If you had a gun you could have put one right upside his head. As it stands the bad guys don't want the good guys to protect themselves, even some of our politicians are selling us out. It's like they can't screw this country fast enough. Best thing you can do is buy a handgun. If your interested in what would be best for home protection and/or packing, then post in the RUB forums and we will set ya up. :)

rub forums? please elaborate as i am not familiar.

i definitely don't want to outsource the power to defend myself as of now.

i have no intentions of taking a gun outside of my house. it is a major no-no

and problems will arise because it is nyc.

i would consider it (as a local law) only if the nypd service is golden.

given the recent experience, they aren't getting my vote.

First it was the "Dream Act" and now it's come to stopping Americans from being able to defend themselves against criminals.
