The beneficiary has informed me that "they"/"lawyers who do these things" have given these information:

1) Certified Copies of DOB, PCC etc..are considered more legit than Attested copies.

2) If PCC (Police Clearance Certificate) were brought from another state, it is advised to get those Certified by them in Delhi so that the embassy will believe that those documents are legit because of the Certified Stamp, signature and sticker on it.

3) "They" quoted her over Rs.2000 per Certified copy!

Can someone please verify these information (#1, #2, #3).

Due to this ridiculous COST, the beneficiary just got the Attested copies of DOB and other documents instead of "Certified"

 I feel like these people are trying their best to get more money out of the beneficiary.

What has your experience been like? Please share your thoughts & expeirience, advice etc..

Thanks guys

Here is the sample "Certified" copy they showed the beneficiary.

#1 - Yes, certified copies are more legit than attested. But Original copies are more better. I mean, sometimes NVC dont like certified copies, and just need original, so it is better to get original copies.

Birth Certificate, PCC, Marriage Certificate, their original duplicate copies can be obtained more than 1 easily.

#2 - US Embassy cares for Regional Passport Office PCC Only. In Delhi, there is already Passport Seva Kendra, so simply get the PCC from there, and its cost is Rs 500 INR. Ask them for 2 original copies. It is easy and simple. I got the PCC within same day in Chennai. Even though my passport was from North India, and I have lived in other few state for a year or more.

#3 - Rs 2000 INR ( Almost $40 USD ) - Not worth to pay for certified copy. Apply for duplicate original copies, it would be much cheaper. Like around Rs 100 ( $2 ) or less.

If we talk about official cost. My birth certificate guy charged me Rs 5 ( 10 cents ) for 1 copy of birth certificate.

Better to submit original doc.

For Birth-Certificate - You can get it from the office where the birth registration was done. I did the same. In Nov, 2011, I asked for 3 original copies of birth certificate from the same office where my birth was registered.

Marriage Certificate - Can get from the same office where it was registered. Just apply for re-issue the copy, and pay the normal fee.

Original Duplicate copy and Real Original are the same. I requested 5 copies of marriage certificate at the time of registration and all look exactly same. I asked for 3 birth-certificate in Nov 2011, they look same. I asked for 2 PCC, and both look same.

Yes, for # 3, it's pretty cheap and easy to get from local birth registration office and marriage reregistration office. I went to marriage registration office for my marriage registration with my wife on a day after our wedding ceremony. The person who processed our application said you can come back anytime later to have a certified copy and just bring your original with you and he will issue immediately at a nominal price (I don't remember exact amount but I believe it was Rs 50 or less)
