anyone who doesn't put George Washington as #1 is fooling themslves. They wanted to give him the crown and he refused it. That right there shows honesty and integrity above all else.

Best:

1. George Washington

2. Thomas Jefferson

Beyond that... no one worth true note.

Worst:

1. Woodrow Wilson

2. Franklin D. Roosevelt

3. Ronald Reagan

4. Jimmy Carter

5. Abraham Lincoln

i'm a little surprised with Lincoln, only in that without him the US would likely be just the northeast and midwest with a separate west, south, and maybe texas. IE most of us wouldn't even be US citizens.

Sounds good. Then we could have avoided so many foreign entanglements.

Well that depends on what country you were in. The Republic of California probably would avoid war.

Maybe. But, there would still have been the legacy of Captain John C. Fremont.

Also, going into the Civil War, the North and South had different allies in Europe. You have to wonder if Britain would have squeezed the French friendly Union between Canada and the Southern States.

Lincoln was a hypocrite and a jerk. On top of that he had no desire to end slavery in the south at all, despite the picture that everyone tries to put out there. He did it in the strategy of war. Nothing more and nothing less. Lincoln defied the will of the people and it cost him his life. Everything Lincoln did was calculated for his benefit and his alone. Had the south won the war he would have lost his presidency and he knew that. Lincoln had to shut people up and it's why the civil war even happened to begin with. Lincon supported the south and their right to secede, but others were looking for ways to crucify Lincoln if he didn't do something about the south. All he ever wanted was the power and the respect. He got it all right, and with it came a bullet.

What did Lincoln do other than cause the deaths of 620,000 Americans?

He started the trend of federal government being more powerful than state governments - even when they voted to exercise their own rights.

Without Lincoln's insistance on the US being a union of states, we'd probably still have a loose band of independent states.
