My fiance went for her Fiance Visa interview to the London Embassy today. We had spent quite a while making sure our checklist was updated, she had everything with her, etc. I am a United States citizen.

When she got there, at the first window they only asked her for several documents, the birth certificate, police certificate, affadavit form (they gave her the supporting documents back), and maybe 1 other document. She gave them these documents. After 15minutes, she was called to the second window, where the only question they asked her was "How did you two meet." After she answered that question, they made her take an oath that everything she had provided was true, which she did. Immediately after taking this oath, the lady informed my fiance that this case is under review. My fiance was confused and tried to provide all of the additional documents, including bank statements, etc. but the lady said no this is a decision made by authorities and we will hear back anywhere between a few weeks to a few months. My fiance said that the lady was hospitable.

What is going on here? Has anyone dealt with a similar experience or heard of anything? Or maybe you haven't but you have some feedback or insight into why this can be? I am a US Citizen, never been accused of anything but a speeding ticket, solid credit and solid job, solid everything - I don't understand what is going. Please help me understand this? We have people flying in from all over for a reception for her arrival - and now we can't even do anything and people booked non-refunable flights! What is going on?????????????????

Sorry to hear that - such a big loss with the air tickets (may be they can move those to future dates with some fine). London is supposed to be easy and hence it is difficult to say what could have triggered the additional review. Hope you guys get the visa soon.

Has your fiancee ever resided in a different country? From what I gather, it's usually about the petitioner at this stage. Not saying there's anything off about your fiancee(I'm not passing judgement.) however some cases seem to go through a more extensive background check if the petitioner has resided in a different country(or born outside the current country).

Sorry about the delay.

ZachinCalifornia I know your pain and confusion. The same situation happened with my fiance and I last week.

AP can be random or they may need more time to review newly submitted documents. You can call DOS and see if there is anything else they need from you for sure. I am truly sorry you and yours are going through this, just know you are not alone. Do some research in the AP forum and see how others are dealing. I didn't know this forum existed till our case was put on AP.

Remember being in AP is not a denied visa so you may still be in good shape once your AP is over. Did they keep her passport or did they return it to her?

The same thing happened in my case, I found out that I didn't submit enough information when I filed in the beginning. I was under the impression that as long as he had all the documents at the interview we would be fine; but they look more so at what was submitted on the front end.

In London, if all paperwork is in.. medical is good... financials pass... there is still one last security check.

There's at least one database to clear and maybe two more optional ones an embassy can choose to use. If she wasn't born in the UK they could do more. Here's a list of countries that are often checked:

  • Individuals born in one of the seven countries currently designated as state sponsors of terrorism, Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Libya, North Korea, Sudan, or Syria.
  • Individuals born in one of the “List of 26” countries which the USCIS has not publicized but includes Arab and Muslim countries including: Afghanistan, Algeria, Bahrain, Eritrea, Lebanon, Morocco, North Korea, Oman, Qatar, Somalia, Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates, Yemen, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, and Kuwait among others.

If her middle name is Mohammed or herfather is named Osama bin Laden, if her training (listed on the DS-157) includes special skills like munitions or chemistry of bomb making, if she frequently travels to certain countries... I'm making up these examples to speculate on things that could trigger additional processing. So if her name is exactly the same as anybody that US security has on a watch list (or even yher parent's name), then they have to do "additional" processing to make sure she isn't the bad guy or the person associated with the bad guy. Sometimes they have to go so far as have a security file physically pulled by an official at another location. They have to send a request to another office for an officer to pull a paper file and rule out that she is not the person implicated. You can imagine the potential for hold-ups there.

Reason why in AP? How long will it take?

They are very secretive about national security so they aren't going to explain "we are secretly following a guy named John Doe who has been reported to... and your fiances Dad has that same name." Nobody ever gets told a reason they are in additional processing. They don't know how long it will take as I explained before about tracking it down things. Maybe a database clears you and maybe a paper file has to be reviewed in Timbuktu. It's all vague and tied up in homeland security secrecy. So you just wait it out. Congressmen can not help get reasons, or get you out of it.

On VJ, I've know a number of India and Pakistan born people in AP for 4-8 weeks a couple of years ago. A Brazillian and Nigerian were approved and issued visas immediately this year, so it's not so much about not being born in the UK anymore. Then there was treehugger in 2010 who didn't tick any of the normal reasons we speculate about and was in additional processing for 9 months before dropping off VJ. Don't know how that one turned out.

This is exactly why they say not to make any arrangements (including flights) until the visa is "in hand". It's unfortunate. This usually happens at the NVC, and not at a consulate interview. Regardless, continue calling in, and requesting updates.
