Speed of light exceeded at Cern

Scientists at the Cern research centre in Switzerland are to publish results that appear to show subatomic particles travelling faster than the speed of light.

This news could threaten one of the fundamental laws of physics if it is proved to be correct.

Einstein’s special theory of relativity depends on the fact that nothing in the universe can exceed the speed of light.

In this experiment, neutrinos sent from Cern, home of the large hadron collider, to the Gran Sasso laboratory in Italy appeared to arrive a few billionths of a second sooner than light would have.

However, the group responsible for the findings have reacted cautiously despite spending a significant amount of time looking for any mistakes. The team are aware that systematic errors could mean that the results are incorrect but they have been unable to find any thus far.

The results of the study will now be posted online so that it can be scrutinised by other scientists.

If the discovery is true, it would be a revolutionary one for modern physics and could even suggest that time travel is possible.

There goes Physics.blink.gif

Does that mean no more global warming?

Should have bought a Timex®.

When you're talking billionths of a second, it's likely someone forgot to carry a one somewhere.

There are nutjobs out there that think this collider will cause a black hole and swallow the earth inside itself. Seriously. Google it.

When and if something goes faster than the speed of light it is supposed to create a black hole. That is actually only one thing that is supposed to happen. It is also supposed to consume all the matter in the Universe.

But something just did go faster than c and yet here we are.

Unless it really didn't.

Or we really aren't :o

Yes and if it can verified and shown to have happened for sure than Physics as it has stood for over 100 years is overthrown pretty much. Einstein was wrong.

Einstein had a hell of a run.good.gif

That plane has been flying on fumes and duct tape for a while. Quantum mechanics has pretty much replaced relativity for everything but gravity. There are even a few more wrinkles in the space-time continuum than were anticipated by Einstein, or even Star Trek.

Quantum is the physics of the sub atomic world and Relativity is the Physics of the Macro. So far everything has been subjected and and matched with Einsteins theory so far except one thing and that is his prediction of a Graviton and gravity waves. Every few years some scientists comes back and says he has discovered it but it never has been able to be reproduced or withstood review.

It is because that everything has been proven so far in Einstein's theories is that this discovery in Cern will have to be looked at strongly.

There have been a few observations in astrophysics that require some major shoehorning to make them fit within Einstein's theories. It turns out extremely massive objects are just as reluctant as small particles to obey the laws of relativity. I am sure scientists will make the same effort here.
