What are some of the best countries to retire to when the US economy finally goes belly up, and the rest of the world stops loaning us money?

Some things I am looking for:

1) Safety

2) Good medical care

3) Little or no taxes

4) Low cost of living

Any ideas? Besides the Philippines? I could do that easy.

I could buy Angel Island in the San Francisco Bay, declare war on the US, and lose. I would be set for life from all the foreign aid.

I've heard Belize is nice. I looked into that before and you can get a Retiree Resident Visa or some such thing with just proving a certain amount of money in the bank or a pension. Plus English is the primary language.

I have thought about Costa Rica. My brother and his family highly recommend the place. I was seriously thinking about moving there and opening a club catering to Gringos before I met my Pinay wife.

we vacationed there, it was AMAZING. There are soooooooooo many Americans it was unbelievable. The houses were really cheap to buy as new construction homes. The Americans we all met there were retired and living there and loved it some of them have travel type business they do on the side because its huge for tourism and its getting even bigger for it. - costa rica also does not have a military anymore, they disbanded it in order to fund schooling for the people. So everyone could get an education.

Why did you have your friend killed?

 My fault for speaking in a passive voice.

He was visiting other friends of mine living in Belize, somehow ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time, and met his demise. He was a great guy, everybody who knew him liked him, and I had no reason to wish him ill.

I am thinking the same about the Philippines. Besides, my wife would go crazy with the competition. I have seen that happen with other Fil-Am couples moving back to the Philippines.

There are a number of Cost of Living studies, and some focusing on retirement that you can look up or pay for. Runzheimer International is a big outfit doing that. I underbid them on the last study for the State of Alaska, and did cost of living estimates for over four hundred locations they send beneficiary checks to. Philippines came out on top. In the US, Arkansas was about the best.

We can't find the right combination of things yet in the Philippines. The more remote you go to match our ideas about living, (being from Alaska and needing a lot of space), you can't seem to get it without bringing on risks with NPA, Abu-Sayyef, MILF, kidnap for ransom thugs, etc. I was very disappointed at the lack of sanitation, garbage disposal, and water treatment in the remote areas too. I like it clean. You can do the gated compound thing in and around Manila. The medical facilities are better there too, but cost more. But even there the cost of living is half the average of the USA cities I looked at.

Still looking.
