Hello, I am married to a Filipina and am living in Columbus Ohio...things have been going great there except for one thing. We've lived here for 9 months and the wifey hasn't met any Filipina friends. Any Filipinas from central Ohio that are looking to meet new friends? We've tried a couple things like getting involved with a Filipino gathering but most of them are really, really stuck up and they ask you about your job(ie how much money you make) right off the bat...she wants real friends not ones that only want rich friends. :-)

Have you tried MeetUp for social networking. It might be easier to meet new people with similar interest NOT just a similiar background. I have lived in several cities across Canada and the US and have found this website to be great for meeting people interested in the same hobbies, etc. as myself!

Good luck to your wife!

This type of people are everywere. In fact, some of them are even worst than what you described. We've seen it, we've encountered it. To me, this kind of behavior is absolutely shameful and disgusting. Makes me scratch my head and wonder... "what is it about "America" (really) that's making (some, if not most) people insane after they got here?

However, there are some good and real ones as well. Your wife just have to be very "picky" in making friends. This way, she will find the "mabait and descent" ones.

This one seems real, fun and interesting. Thanks for posting the link.

We might try it sometime, too. :star:

If you live in Columbus there is a Filipino grocery store La Herba Buena in the Dublin Center (I think that is the name of the shopping center) next to the movie theater on Sawmill road between 270 and Dublin Granville road. The owner can put you in touch with the two filipino groups in central Ohio.

I suggests to make friends even it they are not filipinos... This is a reality for filipinos, although not all of us are like this... we have this thing called crab mentality and yes.. the stuck up people who think they are shitting gold... I have a cousin in Jakarta, a sister in Japan, niece in UK and a lot of friends all over the world and we had a talk about stuck up filipinos... and we agree on one thing...

It is better to make friends with other nationalities than filipinos... although we do not generalized it... but be open to make friends with everyone... avoid filipinos who thrived on small talks which we called "chismis" and always be wary when you meet someone who is "too friendly" and "too religious"...

I agree with your last post that my wife should meet other friends that aren't necessarily Filipinos, BUT...where my wife works the people are all wild crazy party people and she doesn't relate at all. We don't drink and party so we don't fit into that group. I guess it's just easier for her to make friends with Filipinas because they can relate more closely with each other...and speak their language...that's understandable.

Here's the honest truth that I have discovered:

I don't associate myself at all with stuck up people who only want friends with good paying jobs and social status. I could care less about those people. But when my wife started meeting a few Filipinos here and there (some at work, some in public), MOST of them act like they are rich, even like how a millionaire would act. It's disgusting. They have to drive the nicest cars, wear the most expensive clothes and jewelry...and they only seem to talk about how much they have and how great they are. I know there's an American dream to have things you couldn't necessarily have in another country, but it seems that immigrants here go crazy with materialism if they have the means to. I'm not knocking on immigrants because I know a lot of great Filipinos here too...but this problem we've encountered a lot! We went to an Asian festival this past May and there was a Filipina lady selling things and my wife was excited to talk to someone who speaks her language. But only a few sentences in she started asking us what we do for a living. I know what the intention is there - to find out how much money we make. UGH!

:) Most of the friends I made here are older people... The make more sense that most people my age and I learn a lot from them...

Finally somebody from Columbus, OH...if God permits I'll be there in a few months.kicking.gifkicking.gifkicking.gif

I know how your wifey feels, I went there and stayed with my fiance for 5 months and I haven't seen/met any Filipinos. I bet she miss talking to somebody with our language (that's how I felt) I have couple of friends there but of course, having Filipino friends is different. Does she know how to drive? Maybe she can drive to La Herba smile.gif I hope I'll get to meet you guys someday...I never thought that there are some "show my status quo" in OH, I've met a couple of them but it's in CA and IL, they like to show-off a lot (I'm not a big fan though). I still think Columbus is a friendly state like when you go to Easton/Polaris they will always greet you hi/hello even they don't know you such a lovely place maybe she can meet some friends their even though it's not a Filipino. PM me your yahoo or fb so we can get in touch cool.gif

Local Catholic churches will certainly have Filipino members in a city the size of Columbus. Anyone is free to attend mass. Just say hi and introduce yourselves on the way out of church. If you don't see any Filipinos at that mass, they may be attending a different Catholic church in the area or at a different time. Odds are there is a Filipino priest in the Columbus area but I don't know that for a fact. Yahoo lists 7 Catholic churches there.
