Hey all i've been reading this website for so long! lol

A bit of background. Im a UK student nurse (will gradute as an RN with a degree in Adult nursing next summer) My boyfriend is a USC and we're planning on getting married at some point. So im either gonna go over on a fiancee or a spousal visa. My problem is i want to increase my chances of getting a nursing job wheni arrive in California. I told him i want to work here a year and get some experience before i leave and then i can take my NCLEX.

My question is has anyone here been in my boat? What i really wanna do is leave next year as soon as i finish my course (obviously he needs to file first) but im worried about my eligiblity to take the NCLEX cause the nursing course in the states is different to the UK.

I guess what im really looking for is some reassurance that im doing the right thing (he'll wait for me no matter what as he doesnt want me to regret leaving and finding out i cant be employed wth my degree)

Also if i do leave as soon as i finish my course where should i look for courses to eh upgrade (i guess) my course so it's the same as the US degree so i can take the NCLEX?

Thanks in advance

Felicia

I am a USC RN. I am Licensed in California. The site you need for registration is http://www.rn.ca.gov/

good luck

I clicked on international nurses wanting to get cali license. http://www.rn.ca.gov/careers/howto.shtml#intl

Steps for International RN Applicants

Here are the basic steps to become a California RN if you were educated in another country and have never been licensed in another U.S. state. (If you are licensed in another U.S. State and have passed the U.S. licensing exam (NCLEX), you may qualify for licensure by endorsement.)

1.Read the detailed application instructions and download forms at this link. You can also request an application packet by contacting the Board of Registered Nursing.

2.Submit your application form, with appropriate fees. You will need to provide a U.S. Social Security number before a California license can be issued to you.

3.Submit your fingerprints for a criminal background check.

4.Submit a copy of your license or diploma that permits you to practice as an RN in your country.

5.Have your college transcripts sent directly to the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN). If your transcripts are not in English, there are special instructions for translation included in the application packet.

6.If your college has never submitted a transcript to the BRN for evaluation, the BRN will also need the college's curriculum, catalogs, or other documents for evaluation.

7.Apply for an Interim Permit if you wish to work under supervision temporarily while your licensing application is being evaluated. If you are from a non-English speaking country or did not take your country's licensing examination in English, you will need to take an English comprehension examination to qualify for an Interim Permit. See the detailed application instructions for more information.

8.Take and pass the National Council Licensing Examination (NCLEX). The exam is computerized and given continuously 6 days a week.

GOOD LUCK!!

Hello! I am a US-RN but im still in the Phils awaiting for the approval of my IR-1 visa. My husband is a USC. I suggest you google the Board of Nursing of the state in the US wherein you intend to work. There are requirements that you need to comply. Each state has different requirements. They will also evaluate your credentials (usually the CGFNS) if your nursing school have met the US standards in terms of the number of units & the number of duty hours. As suggested above, you try to ask around in allnurses.com. Its also a nurse friendly website.
