Hi all,

My fiance and I are trying to find the best shipping method/company to ship over a flat panel tv of his...and a box with a fish tank in it. The rest he is going to bring 2 suitcases on the plane.

What shipping companies do you suggest? We want it to be reasonable in price.

thank you!

Hi there

I would think very seriously whether it is worth bringing any electronic items over, the reason I say this is that the usa uses a different power supply than the uk, and electronic items are so much cheaper here, when you weigh up the costs of shipping it will probably be cheaper in the end to buy one here. Also I shipped over my computer and even had a new power supply put in but I ended up buying a new one here.

Agree!

It would probably be easier to re-purchase the items here.... saves $$ and less hassle!

I suggest ebay.co.uk then ebay.com to repurchase the same TV model here.

I sold my 32" TV for £235, found the same model on eBay which sell with the same period of use and condition for $250-$350. No great difference there but no shipping spent!

For a TV set there's more than mains voltage to worry about.

US mains is 60 Hz vs 50 Hz in the UK.

TV signals are NTSC vs PAL in the UK.

Your UK DVD player will have a PAL output which won't work with a US TV.

These problems can be solved, but if you don't understand what I'm talking about then you certainly shouldn't bring your TV.

My fiance just went through this decision and in the end he decided to sell it on ebay and we are getting an even bigger TV here cause it costs less than over there! you can buy a fish tank at WalMart online or in store for very cheap. I got one there. But if you are set on shipping I suggest Parcels2go.com and it's gonna cost you about 60 quid or more depending on the size and weight.

I'm in the same boat (pardon the pun) however my view is if I can avoid re-purchasing items (that I can't really sell while I'm in the UK) then I'll avoid it.

There's a lot of my ham radio equipment that I can't sell and rebuy because the chances of re-buying a good model (most of it is pre-owned) is slim.

Parcel2go were offering £40 for 8kg or so to the US.

I wish I knew how to send something surface mail - it must be cheaper than DHL et al?

I've had parcels (big ones!) from the US that have taken weeks to get here and have come surface mail... so surely its possible to send a large parcel via surface for cheaper than via airmail?

2.5 kg box measuring 40 x 30 x 20 will cost me £35 to send to the US via parcel2go. Ow.

Edit: Done some research, and surface mail probably wouldn't be much cheaper. Guess I'll bite the bullet. Cheaper than another suitcase...probably.

Another suitcase only cost me about 40 quid... and it was nice to be able to have my stuff same-day (even though it wasn't super important..)

The lady at Manchester took pity on me and instead of the 70 quid fee she waived the overweight fee ( I just had to pay excess at #35 :) She said: Congratulations on your wedding, consider this an early present :)

Haha that was lucky!

I wouldn't advise sending things, the only thing i'm taking electronic is my netbook merely because I only just got it and stubbornly refuse to be parted from it! Going by adverts in WHSmiths - DHL are meant to do better offers then Parcel Force/Post Office. But i think that's just perhaps on lighter objects. I would never advise using the post office - cost £50 to post my guys Xmas present this year and they apparently claimed it couldn't be delivered on the two days he was actually in and then found its way back to mine three months later after being awol.
