alrighty - she's got the passport page notarized by a consul.

Was like a real chinese fire drill, in that

she not understand my instructions, so she came in and tried to get the w-7, 1040, notarized. They don't do that, and sent her packing.

I called her right after, explained 'notarial copy of biographic page' for the umpteenth time, and she finally understood.

She couldn't get back in, so I called the Marine Corp Security desk, they passed a note to the ACS desk, A Consul at the ACS desk sent a Marine outside to get her, bring her back in*. She got the notarial copy of her bio page, and called me back.

WHEW ! I was really worried about this, as I had 3 translators helping her with the instructions I emailed. I guess no one understands my chinese or english ..

in the end, it got done. She had a nice holiday as well with her mother's side of the family (7 uncles, huge extended family)

I should have all within 2 weeks, then sending off to the special W-7 procesing address in Austin TX

* once yer done with an ACS appointment, you can't get back inside if'n yer a PRC person. I tried calling the ACS desk to get them to escort her back in, but ACS doesn't take phone calls during ACS hours. The PRC person handling the switchboard was a tard, as well. After 10 or so attempts, I started thinking, 'Who Else is there in Chengdu Consulate?' So, I thought to myself, "Bring in the Marines! They always get er done!" Sure enough, that backdoor worked, swimmingly well.

It's been rather exciting to track the package on EMS and then USPS. hit's my door today. YAY !

That is good, I doubt I will apply for an ITIN, well if all things go well she plans to come in March, and I am sure SSN may not be issued in time for April, so I can file for an extension (I get a refund anyway) and once SSN is in I will submit the tax return

oh poo - she can walk in on calendar day 16 past the POE date, apply for SSN, come back next day, and get the SSN (not the card)

ITIN issued this week. Yay !

some minutia - date on letter was 23 DEC 2011; it showed up 29 DEC 2011. Geez - such a long time to get a letter in from Austin. It's only 180 miles south o here.

Checked the IRS portal most of the month -

after a while it said the refund check was to be mailed on 27 January 2012. This filing was for Tax Year 2010 - Check even had some interest accrued on it.

Sure enough - it was - and it showed up today.

Next week - gonna set up Tax Year 2011 using the ITIN issued in December - see what the numbers are.

gosh, after all of the mess for getting the ITIN,

the 2nd go round for tax year 2011 was dead easy.

Used an online service, no problems at all.

This was the 2nd year of tax filing for both of us as MFJ - I guess my anomoly is that we did tax year 2010 in December 2011, and tax year 2011 right after, in the first week of february.

Prior years, I not file any individual tax returns, as I've always ONLY filed corporate returns on the two companies that I have [never paid myself any income, so no income tax to declare as an individual].

Her SSN Arrived today in the mail! took only 10 days since POE

so I can do my taxes!

Oh no..... I think I E-filed too soon, IRS rejected my taxes, name and birthday do not match the SSN on file, I might assume the IRS does not have the info yet in the system.

can always do a paper submittal !

in the wee receses for what used to resemble my brain -

I seem to remember that a first time 'user' of the SSN - is no 'hit' with IRS for usage, prior usage,

so the first return MUST be paper filed.

I could, of course, be wrong - but that's what I remember.

your correct, I called the IRS, it has to be paper filed for first time. its a NO HIT and they could not go further with security questions due to it never being in the system.
