The Supreme Court ruled Thursday to uphold Arizona’s law that penalizes companies that knowingly hire illegal immigrants.

In a 5-3 vote, the court concluded that federal immigration law doesn’t prevent the state from revoking the business licenses of companies that violate state law.

Elena Kagan, who was Obama’s solicitor general before being appointed to the court last year, recused herself from the case.

A more recent Arizona law requiring police to check the immigration status of people stopped under suspicion of committing crimes, signed last year by Republican Gov. Jan Brewer, is weaving its way through the courts and is expected to eventually reach the Supreme Court.

It's great to see all the conservatives with their thumbs up on their thread (wave at Danno et al).

Glad to see you guys support a constitutional upholding of a law that allows the state to meddle in the affairs of private business by giving appointed bureaucrats the powers to grant and revoking "business licenses".

Business licenses??? You mean to say that in Arizona, every person who wants to own and operate a business is subject to the governmentlicensing them? And they're not free to simply own and operate said free enterprise business without meddling of government, here on American soil? And you support this? Will wonders never cease.

For the record -- I'm in favor of this particular law, and the SCOTUS ruling today. It seems to me like a reasonable restraint on business in the interests of discouraging illegal workers. But, then again I'm not a "all government regulation is evil" kind of guy.

To heck with business licenses. Simply tax the living ####### out of them, to the point of bankruptcy, for hiring illegals

Who could be against a law that punishes employers for exploiting humans and failing to comply with laws designed to provide a basic level of income and safety for all workers? Anyone? Someone?

Amazing that among ALL the politicians, NO ONE has even suggested a law that everyone agrees with. Kinda makes you think they really don't want to fix the "problem".

Awwe Come now, even the far Right recognizes the State has a right.... and Duty to involve its self in any business activity which is based on illegal activity, in this case the using of trafficked human cargo.

These relationship are rife with all sorts of illegality and exploitation.

The only sad part of it is..... we, like children, accept that the Supreme Court had any say in this matter to begin with.

the news you won't see is other states passing similar law now that the decision is made and the intent of SCOTUS clearly stated. look for at least a dozen states to move on this within the next 6 months. this is just the beginning of the storm.
