yeah like everyone said...don't worry about it. i have a 5 year old that arrived here that only knew some basic english words. he's been here a little over 2 months and he's picked up so much! of course it helped that his uncles, aunts, cousins, etc. etc. speaks to him in english. and when he does not understand what they said, they will explain it to him in tagalog and then make him repeat what they said in english. so just make sure that the people he lives with now start teaching him some english and when he gets here, just speak to him and english and let him know the tagalog translation when he does not understand. he's at that age that his brain will easily absorb things.

Definitely no worries. Our daughter turned 5 the day before flying to the US in September. School started a couple days earlier here and the cut off for kindergarten was age 5 by 1 Oct. She didn't speak any english and it would have been easy to just wait until the next year, but we enrolled her in school right away. Our school doesn't have ESL, but they have a speech therapist, but I think all she needed was the other kids! I couldn't believe how fast she was picking things up. Our son is 3 and it took him a little longer, and I think that is because he wasn't exposed to all of the other kids speaking english at school. Now they both speak english as well as any other 3 and 5 year old! The bad thing is they don't really speak tagalog or visayan now, although I think they understand it when mama gets angry. I wouldn't worry about any extra schooling. Once immersed in the language, kids will pick it up quick. I'm not one for just sticking kids in front of the TV all day, but childern's TV shows will help a lot too. That's where the 3 year old has picked up a lot.

Check to see if the school in your area have a English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program. My fiancee was very concerned about the girls, ages 4 and 6, coming here and adjusting. I check on my local school system website and found that all of the public schools in my area offer ESOL assistance.

So check with your local school system and see what is available.

Thanks,

Lyn and Art

The thing to worry about is whether the child will forget how to speak Tagalog.

 yeah this is so true! I wish I had learned Tagalog when I was younger! I do understand most of my mom and dads dialect though!(pangasinan)

Hello guys,

I like to hear your comment on this topic. My fiancee's kid speaks little English. Just few words. He is 6 years old and if he gets approved with his k2, we are planning to bring him to USA this summer. He will need to join school. I am so worried he will not be able to communicate in his class and *maybe* he will have a very touch time understanding the class.

Anyone one out there experiencing the same?

My last thought is to *maybe* do home-school for the first year until we feel his English is good enough to go to a class room.

So many details that we need to think when bringing our SO and their kids. :)

:help:

Hi,, i have the same concerns before my 2 kids got here in Nov last year. My 9 yr. old son speaks very little english and is very shy. The school put him to an ESOl class or english class for those who don't speak the language,.There were times my son don't wanna go to school coz of inferiority .It.s been 4 months since he started school and am surprised how he had improved,,and when i asked him how he learned so quick?/ he just say"from my classmates" mommy and now i can't get his mouth to shut...lol

My step-daughter was 6 when she came to the US, not speaking a word of english. Now she is 8 and speaks english fluently. Her vocabulary is above average and she reads english above her grade level. All we did was expose her to english at home and in the classroom. Some of the pre-school kids TV programming helped too, especially at the beginning. I wouldn't worry about it. At that age they pick up language like a sponge. Our only concern now is her apparent loss of the ability to speak Visayan, although she can still understand it.

I would perfer my kid go to school in Philippines, I think they get a better education and they will become better adults with manner and learn to respect others and to believe in God.

In USA it's against the law to pray in school, you can't say the Pledge of Alligence to the American Flag since it say "One Nation Under God" in the pledge, so that is illegal.

The USA has bent over backward to accomadate the small faction of people that we have destroyed the American Culture that we once had here.....
