It could be - I have seen petitions sent back because they wrote in the cents, not 0.xx/1.00 (x=cents)

My Advice is usually based on "Worst Case Scenario" and what is written in the rules/laws/instructions. That is the way I roll... -Protect your Status - file before your I-94 expires.

I made the check out to "Deparment of Homeland Security" instead of "US Department of Homeland Security", could this be a problem?

Mine was made out to "Department of Homeland Security" because in the current instructions the "U.S." part (in bold) is on the line above and I just didn't notice it. In any event, they stamped the check with "U.S. Department of Homeland Security" and they cashed it without problem.
