Last September, my wife was involved in a car accident. It's her fault to ran the red light, and hit other car, and she ran straight to the traffic singal pole. (it's 3-4 feet small pole on the island)

Our AAA insurance already take care of other driver.

Today, we received a letter from our city that she needs to pay for $792.16 for the city property damaged.

Invoive description.

Engineering Dept. REPAIR OF TRAFFICE SIGNAL POLE LABOR = 253.06

Vehical 597 AND 819 = 254.10

Material -1 12 Green Arrow LED = 75.00

Police Department Charges = 210.00

Total = 792.16

Keep in mind, she got a ticket for violation ran the red light $500, and she went to traffice school $300, the total cost is $800.

My questions are why do we have to paid for this, or can I call my insurance and AAA will take care of this for me.

Thank you all for your help.

Could be a case of the "Crash Tax" that so many cities are instituting.

Ins should pay minus your deductable. I would call your agent explain the letter to them and forward the letter also. Then follow up with them to make sure it is paid. My daughter did the same thing but failed to follow up and was arrested on a warrant for non payment Ins company apologized for failure to make payment and waived her deductable, She took out a guard rail not a light fixture. Good luck Daniel

Assuming a law-abiding citizen carries the minimum coverage required by the State for Liability part of an automobile insurance policy, in the event the driver caused an accident and at fault, the coverage will pay:

1) if any injury sustained by any occupant (other than your own) involved in the accident UP to the max coverage of the policy.

2) same thing for property damage (other than your own), including vehicle and any other property involved in the accident.

Deductible is for YOUR own property.

To the OP, just MHO, this is the reason why my wife goes to school by bus. So she has time to get used to the way traffic works here (in VN red means go anyway, as long as it's safe). Now not only your premium goes through the roof, she will have bad experience whenever going through intersections.

You didn't buy her a brand new car did you? Learn from this lesson and get her a used one (as long as it's safe).

Just remember, life over there in VN is NOT real! Your money will be worth a LOT less once you get back over here. Back to reality, cowboy!

Yeah.. happy friday.:dance::dance: Thank you ALL for your input and advices...

I been working for the Ins. Agency. AAA will pay for $582.16, and we will not going to pay for Police Department Charges = 210.00. This is dump. My wife and I both are paying tax, why in the world we have to pay for the Police Service. (This is what my INS. Agency tole me).

DQ = No, my wife is driving an old car, and I am driving a new Honda CRV.

Notes : also, we don't have to pay for the $500 deductable..

Do yourself a favor and pay the police charges. It's probably for them having to bring police to direct traffic because pole was damaged. You don't want this to go to municipal court, where you can't win. The judge that decides the cases are paid for by the city so they almost never rule against the city. It's like a legal government sponsored racket. Throw in late charges and interest and it's like double pain.
