New Cambodian Law no marriage over 50

Apparently the Cambodian government in yet another embarrassing grandstanding move has alerted Embassies that Khmer women cannot marry expats over the age of 50 or with less than $2,400 per month income. Leaving aside the utter hypocrisy the question is how is the US Embassy dealing with this? The diplomatic note specifically says it only deals with marriage within Cambodia so one would assume it would not impact US policy re: K1 but would appreciate any information anyone has on this as my !-129F is on its way to the US Embassy in Cambodia right now.

I just got a reply from my query to the U.S. embassy saying since we have applied for a K1 visa it will not be affected by this stupid ploy by the Cambodian government (my editorializing not the embassy's). That is encouraging...my deepest fear was that the Embassy buckle to this discriminatory concept of the pretext of maintaining good relations with the host country.

My question being..this amount..is it th amount you take home per month..or pre tax amount you make?

Many of us will wonder such thoughts..and not know how to interpret this.

I think it means your take home pay. I don't think the Cambodian government cares how much tax is being deducted from your paycheck so you need to make x amount of dollars. At least that's how I read it anyways.

I would say its gross since it did not say net income of 2500. With different taxes rates for single married with or without dependents I think a 2500 net income would be to hard to regulate.

Knowing the Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this law can be circumvented very easily.

At our interview at the MFA...this question was brought up, and asked many many times.

Our interviewer made sure I understood that this is take home pay, after taxes, and that this income would be viewed and questioned at a later date in this process.

He made sure we understood this thought, and even asked his co-worker to make sure this was made clear to my wife being interviewed by him.

I guess it is a formality..I meet the requirement so I need not worry..but how others will be affected is yet to be seen as time passes.

I am creating a Visa web page to help people uderstand this process better in Cambodia.

The VISA page is just new, and very incomplete, and the present information will be deleted..but will look totally different when I have the info I need to complete the "NEW PAGE"

If anyone has any papers, documents..or anything they can add..please let me know and I will be glad to add them to the web page, and the new look.

As Cambodian laws are so different from every other country, and so strict..I want to help others going thru this.

So if anyone has the interview sheet, with questions on how you met, where, when, how long, ..please send it to me..and I will add it.

I am also looking for the Health certificate sheet after the blood draws saying you are good on communicable diseases if anyone has it.

But any documents..or sheets would be appreciated if you have them and want to add them to help others, I can even edit the info to remove personal information, and numbers.

Hope to help all when it is done..and make it clearer especially for nonkhmer people who want this to be more transparent and understandable.

I don't mean to be a topic thief, but how does this affect someone of Cambodian origin who is a US citizen?

For example, a male US citizen aged 30, born in Thailand in camps to Cambodian parents (now US citizens), has been promised to a Cambodian girl. He doesn't meet the income requirement(he only makes $1500 US per month). Will his Cambodian background have any bearing on this law. He isn't particularly keen to marry anyway, and it would be so much easier if he knew the marriage would not be allowed rather than fight with his parents to get out of it.

As an addendum, the family has tried twice to bring the girl in question to the US and both times been denied. The reason for the first denial I m not sure, but the second time was because the application was filed outside the allotted time. He hasn't actually met with this girl for over 5 years.
