Good afternoon,

Can someone explain what the affidavit of divorce is that the US Consulate provides?

I need to go to the US consulate to swear that I am divorced or demonstrate that I am single and able to get married in Brazil.

They require a sworn affidavit of divorce.

Do I need to bring my original divorce decree?

What is the document that the US consulate provides? Just a document confirming that I swore to be single? What is included on the document?

Any explanation as to how this works will be much appreciated.

Thank you

My fiancé and I we were going to get married in Rio de Janeiro at first and for this "status" sworn he had to go to the US Embassy in Rio bringing his documents (passport, birth certificate), he had to pay a fee and schedule the appointment, as he was never married he didn't need the divorce papers, but I would tell you to bring it with you and everything you have to prove that you're divorced... what happened on the appointment was that he had to answer a few questions to the consul, such as where he lives, his age and finally his status, that was it, then he had to sign the sworn in front of the consul. It took a long time waiting (like almost 2 hours) and like 5 minutes for it to be done! Hope to have helped you!

And by the way, just a tip, if you intend to get married here in Brazil don't forget to bring some letter to prove the place you live in the US (electricity bill, water bill, phone bill, bank letter) because they demand it in order to prove you don't intend to reside here. If they think that you want to live here they are gonna tell you that you'll have to apply to get a 'CPF' before to get married which is a register brazilians have, and I don't think you would want to wait more for that.

Thanks Linha87.

What exactly goes on the document? Is it just a statement saying that you are single/divorced?

Does it included when you were married, where and with whom?
