Florida Drivers License

So my wife finally got her EAD card and went to apply for her FL driver's license. She already had an Illinois driver's license. So they told her she would be getting the Florida driver's license in the mail in 30 days and they gave her a permit with her Illinois driver's license stapled to it and cut on the corner. The lady at the counter called it a learner's permit. In Florida I learned that you cannot drive alone with a learner's permit .. but is this a learner's permit or can my wife drive by herself?

That doesn't sound right. I recently moved to Florida from Michigan & I was given a 30 day temporary license until my new one came in the mail. It was not called a learners permit.

What does it say on the actual piece of paper that she was given? Does it state learners permit or temporary license?

It says temporary driving permit but the lady called it a learner's permit ... and it has her out of state license stapled to it.

I think she must've said that by mistake. It's not a learners permit so she'll be fine to drive as usual.

That definitely doesn't sound right...

And, immigration issues aside, that must be something new because when I moved to Florida in the 90s, they took my Maryland license and gave me a regular Florida license on the spot.

I spent 4 1/2 hours at the Florida DMV today. I got mine re-newed, got my name changed, and got Sean his driver's license.

They did the same thing to him, expect they called it a "30 day temporary license," cut his Canadian license, and told us to expect the license to come from Tallahassee. They told us to come back before the 30 days to get a new temporary license if we hadn't received the permanent one.

EDIT: I just checked and his is called a "Temporary Driving Permit" License Type: E

Mine is also a class E, which is the regular driver's license.

You have heard of people who had a brain tumor. Oftentimes, the only solution is to remove one side of the brain. It's a drastic operation, but most people do recover as the other side of the brain takes over the chores of the removed side. These people live perfectly normal lives, to some extend.

Now, if the entire brain is removed, there's only 2 jobs left: Social Security Administration and Department of Motor Vehicles.

If your wife has an out-of-state driver license, she usually is required to take the written test (as traffic laws do differ from state to state), but no driving test. Until the final license arrives in the mail, she'd get a temporary license, a driving permit.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

We were told at both DMVs that we went to (yes, we went to 2 DMVs to get what we needed) that in Florida you don't have to re-test at all if you surrender your previous license. Sean was not made to take a written test or road test, and was told he'd get the final license in the mail from the State.

Is the same in Pennsylvania, they take your out of state license by defacing it a, hole punch, and issue you a new license on the spot from Pennsylvania per my sister, she says that you must pay the full fee at that time even if your Florida license (where she was from)is only days old. From what she said there was no drivers test required not even a written one. Unless the out of state license was expired. and her's was current.

The information I posted previously was from when she did it, They may have changed the regulations since then. She changed it 3 years ago.. Best to check with the states DMV for current rules and regulations

Ok, if it is a learners permit, it will say learners permit. It sounds to me like your wife has a temporary permit. This is a piece of paper you are given, so that should you be pulled over you can provide them with proof that you are allowed to drive.

Because of new rules, the DMV are running a check on your wife's immigration status. Once she is verified, she will be issued her card.

I too was given one of these whilst waiting for my card to arrive. Sadly my card never did arrive because my married name is on my greencard and USCIS had failed to update the system with my married name (yes, I know....even though the greencard was in my married name) so I had to return to the DMV and show a paperwork trail proving I was the person on the database AND the person on the GC.

She's good to drive and if the card doesn't show in the allotted time, go to the DMV in person and get it ironed out.
