Hello - I am a US citizen and my Canadian fiance just obtained his K-1 Visa. He will be driving across the border in a few days in a rented van with his belongings, but we can not find any information about any rules & regulations for moving across the border with the visa and the US Consulate said they could not provide him with any information on this when he obtained the visa. We saw on one of the forums that he may have to itemize the contents of the van? Are there certain hours that you need to drive across the border with the visa? Can he have a passenger in the van with him to help with the long drive?

We would really appreciate any advice or links to online resources.

Thank you!

It is suggested that you bring a list of what you have with you when you cross. Like nick said, they generally do not ask for it, but there have been people who were asked. Also don't be surprised if they want to look through the van. It doesn't happen all the time, but sometimes it does and its really nothing to be concerned about.

As far as the hours, it depends on what border you are planning on crossing at. Do you have any idea yet? Most operate 24 hours, but there are some that cannot process visas at certain hours, and some that do not process visas at all. If you are planning on crossing at a major land border, you shouldn't have a problem. I crossed at the Peace Bridge in Fort Erie Ontario at 6am on a Saturday morning. Generally if you go early, you will beat the rush.

I don't see a problem with him bringing a friend, as long as the friend has the required ID (ie. passport). A lot of people bring friends or family members across to help with the move.

You may want to post this in the Canada regional forum, or ask a moderator to move it for you. You will get personal experiences from everyone, which help a lot!
